9/8/98 | It is the first week in September and the Foy web site is not any where
close to ready for anyone to begin putting information into it. There are
two reasons for this:
(A) I seriously underestimated the amount of effort that would be required. I estimated it would take 40 to 50 hours to get the site to where it could be used and another 40 or 50 to put on the finishing touches. It is going to take five to ten times that long. I've never been this wrong with an estimate before. I guess it is sort of like a doctor treating himself. (i.e. not a good idea) Since it was principally for myself and looked like fun I was too optimistic. (B) I seriously overestimated the amount of time I would have to devote to the project. I spend 15 to 20 hours a week on genealogy. I thought I could spend half of that on this project. I haven't for three reasons. (1) Computer problems. They are fixed now. (2) I have had opportunities to research some promising lines and did that instead. This will always happen from time to time. (3) I have been discouraged by a dawning realization that "A" above was true. So, now what? Alternatives:
(2) Hire a full time programmer to finish it for me. Estimated cost $10,000 to $20,000. (3) Close my business and do this instead. This would cost more than alternative 2. I actually like this choice best but given the need for food, shelter, and clothing it is not currently viable. (4) Lower my expectations and simplify the design. (5) Give up. I'm working on alternative 4. I would appreciate any thoughts you have on this. What is the minimum that would satisfy us? Thanks,
|
