Foy Family of North Carolina

Amos Simmons Foy wrote in his bible in 1842, "My great grandfather was from France. He married an English lady in Yorkshire England. He was one who settled what is termed, the French Huguenot settlement on Trent River North Carolina. His location was at Rocky Run, two and a half or three miles from New Bern, in that State, hard by which place I was born."

The first Foy to be found in North Carolina records is Thomas Foy. Research done by the New York Historical Society in 1939 for Bryon C. Foy proposes the possibility that Thomas may have been the son of Francis Foy and Serena Miles of Baltimore County, Maryland. Francis Foy's family may have consisted of at least four sons; Joshua Foy, Peter Foy, Miles Foy, Thomas Foy and a daughter, Mary Foy.

A Joshua Foy is found in Jones Co., NC records in 1763. Nothing further is known of Peter Foy. Miles Foy remained in Baltimore County and died there about 1751. Mary also remained in Maryland and was remembered in her brother, Miles Foy 1751 will, as Mary Foy. Thomas Foy is first found in 1749 in Craven Co., NC. The names Francis and Serena were passed down through the Foy family for many generations.

A Thomas Foy married Rebecca Puttee, daughter of Lewis and Rebecca Puttee, in Baltimore County. This Thomas sold 100 acres in Tracey's Park, Baltimore County in November, 1748. He may be the same Thomas Foy found in Craven County, North Carolina deed records in 1749. Thomas and Rebecca had five known sons, John Foy, baptised at St. John's Parish in Baltimore County, MD on 18 Jan 1726, Thomas Foy, Jacob Foy, James Foy and Frederick Foy Sr. The four other brothers were likely to have born in Baltimore County. The birth dates of Thomas, Jacob and Frederick are unknown.

Thomas, Jacob, James and Frederick lived their entire lives in North Carolina, married and raised their children in Craven, Jones and Onslow counties. A death notice in the Raleigh Register in 1822 states James Foy was ninety years old (other sources indicate he was eighty-five), giving him a birth year range of 1732/37. John is found in court records, following in his father's profession as "Ordinary" keeper but no records have been found to indicate if he married or had children. Thomas had one known daughter, and died in Jones County in 1789, Jacob had one son, and in 1786 died in Jones County. James Foy married twice and had eleven children, dying in Onslow County in 1822. Frederick Foy Sr. was married at least once and had known six children. He died in Craven County in 1815.

The generations that followed, as well as remaining in North Carolina, moved to Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas and Texas.
