Joshua Foy
(1786 - 1851)
Joshua Foy son of James Foy Sr. and Elizabeth Ward, was born in Onslow Co. 1786 and died in Onslow Co. 12-15-1851. He was married first to Polly Cox and owned a small Farm in the lower Southwest District (Verona- Town Point) of Onslow Co.
In the 1850 Agricultural Census, Joshua was listed as owning 100 improved acres and 40 unimproved, valued at 700.00. He also owned 3 horses, 8 milk cows, 5 other cattle, 20 sheep and 30 hogs, all valued at 300.00. During the year 1849-1850, he harvested 750 bushels of Indian Corn, 125 bushels of peas and beans, 2 bushels of Irish potatoes, 50 bushels of sweet potatoes, 4 ton of hay and he slaughtered 150.00 worth of animals. He also owned 50.00 worth of farm tools and produced 20 pounds of butter.
Joshua Foy was involved in county affairs. He held the polls of election in Lower Southwest District and was a superintendent of Commons Schools for a number of years. In Nov 1834 he was one of 3 commissioners to build a bridge across New River at Courthouse Ferry. He also served as a senator of Onslow Co in 1838-39,and operated a tavern at his grist mill on the southwest branch of New River.(This would be just 1 mile up the road on Hwy 17 south at Southwest Creek Bridge. The state of NC just torn down the old bridge and building a new one Today)
