Her e-mail of 11/5/98 says "… I don't have any verification of the Carden information that I do have---it kind of fell in my lap. … I have not done much work myself on the Carden line. This is the family of the mother of my former husband who is now dead. He came from the Orange County, NC, area where there are a lot of Cates. Research on his family kind of fell in my lap without knowing the author or having sources. I did check the Cardens against the census as much as I could but know little about them." Mary A Unknown or Mary Gaston?
According to Alice Cates research oldest child was born in 1825.
According to my inherited notes and census records oldest child was born in 1831 but could not use these records to conclusively rule out an 1825 birth. One would assume the marriage occurred before birth of oldest child.
Unsourced note says, "May have married Mary A Gaston in 1828."
Robert Carden's notes say George Carden married Mary (Polly) A Carden 12/31/1828. Could they have been cousins?

Family
See notes on oldest child above. A Cates shows William born in 1825 of George and Mary. My notes show no such child. Remaining 11 children seem to be reasonabley accurate and without contrary assertion from 1850 census onward: Giles 1831, Silas 1831, Eliza 1835, John 1840, Mary Jane 1841, James Jimmerson Carden 1843, Sarah J. 1847, Cynthia Susan 1849, Louisa 1851, Julia 1854, Gaston G 1858.
Cynthia Susan may have been two separate children born close to the same time. Cynthia may not have survived and Susan may have been the next girl. (i.e. in 1850 there is a 1 year old girl named Cynthia, in 1860 there is an 11 year old girl named Susan instead) It may also be that they changed the child's name or that indeed her name was Cynthia Susan or Susan Cynthia.
The 1840 Census seems to show another woman about Mary's age with small children and a teenaged girl living with George. It may also be that this is the wrong George in 1840.

Date and Place of Death
Clearly George died between 1860 and 1870 because he is in 1860 census but not the 1870 census. He lost a son in the War Between the States. Grief may have broken his health. One would assume that he died in Orange Co., NC but this is all speculation. Robert Carden's and Bryce Davis's notes both show his death date as Jan 23, 1863.

Right now (12/8/1998) I believe George's parents were John and Patsey Carden. Here is why: from the 1850 Census we have these four family groups living in a cluster.

The first group (Group 1290) is the familiar George and Mary family group. The others may be living close because they are related. Other evidence that suggests that they are related is Silas (Line 4) is a witness to Simpson's (Line 17) wedding to Julia A Thompson Oct 16, 1856. Heads of household John and George could be brothers or cousins. For the sake of argument lets assume they are brothers and see if we can disprove it.

When we compare to the 1840 census it is John (Line 11) that has a son the right age to be William (Line 20), not George. William must then be John's son if, indeed, he belongs to either.

How does the Lynch family (Group 1295) fit into all this? A Patsy (Line 27) Carden married a John Carden on Jan 6, 1800. A Betsey (Line 24) Carden married a Thomas (Line 23) Lynch on April 20, 1826. I believe Betsey is the daughter of John & Patsey and that Patsey lived with Thomas and Betsey after her husband, John, passed away.

Unfortunately I can find no John Carden's as head of household who would match Patsey's husband in earlier census records, at least for Orange Co. NC. There is a family in 1810 in Stokes Co., NC that might match. (two counties over) There are no matching John Carden's in any NC census from 1820 - 1840. (by matching I mean with wife and children the right age) It may be that they moved out of state, were not at home when the census takers came by, or that John had already died and Patsey was with the Lynch family. I have no Lynch census records prior to 1850.

I know a James Carden (1747 - 1842) lived in Granville Co. and Orange Co. for several years before moving to Coffee Co., TN in about 1809. He left behind a son named John (bef 1784 - 1834) who was old enough to be the father of George, John and Betsey. If this is the father of George then this line can be traced back to Robert Carden (1630 - 1682) in Virginia. On the other hand, there are a number of other John Carden's in the north central part of North Carolina who could be John the son of James.

In conclusion, I am reasonably convinced that George, John, and Betsey in the 1850 census above are the children of John and Patsey Carden who were married in 1800. (at least until a better theory presents itself.) However, connecting this John to James is almost pure speculation.

Information I have received from my elders is, SILAS is buried under the large cedar tree. His grave stones are those that are the farther-most distance apart. There are two stones approximately seven to eight feet apart. I'm not saying he was seven or eight feet tall. These stones could mark the grave of SILAS
LINK CARDEN. SILAS was married three times and fathered seventeen (17) children.

SILAS LINK CARDEN 35 son of GEORGE CARDEN and MARY (Polly) A. CARDEN married HARRIET WARD 30, daughter of DAVID BLACKWOOD and TABY BLACKWOOD of Orange County. Her father was dead. Her mother was living. They were married in Chapel Hill, N.C. at the residence of Mrs. Lydia Johnston by C.W. Johnston, Justice of the Peace. Witnesses were G.B.Harris, Lydia Johnston, and Martha Walker. The marriage was consummated November 3, 1871.

HARRIET'S first marriage was to JAMES M. WARD. The wedding occurred September 30, 1852. Their children were CHARLES E. WARD born 1856, WILLIAM T. WARD born 1860, and JOHN J. WARD born 1864.

The age given by HARRIET in the 1870 census listed her as 36. If this is correct she was 38 when she married SILAS) Parents of HARRIET were Tabitha "Taby" M. Blackwood 11/30/18023/8/1886, and David K. Blackwood 10/19/18047/4/1859. Both were buried in the Little River Presbyterian Church cemetery located in Orange County near Caldwell,N.C.

LULA HICKS CARDEN, daughter of JOHN F. HICKS and CAROLINE JACKSON was born September 26, 1881. She died June 10, 1952 and is buried beside her husband in Section VI of Maplewood Cemetery.
