"Our earliest identified
ancestor was William Davis ( -1755) who married Ellen
Bland, daughter of James Bland (1655-1798/09). Between 1722 and 1745
William Davis received grants for about 1250 acres and his brother Thomas
received grants for about 1550 acres, largely in Prince William County,
adjoing the lands of each other and some adjoining lands of their brother
John (12 Va. 325). Some of these grants were among the following:
(1) On February 16,
1725 William Bland and William Davis, both of Stafford County (which at
that time included Prince William) received a grant for 376 acres on both
sides of Occoquan Run and on Crooper's (Crupper's) Cabin branch flowing
into the Run from the North (Book A, page 203). Prior thereto William,
Richard and James Bland had received several other grants in the same area
(Book 3, page 155; Book 4, pages 48 and 50; Book A, page 272 and Book B,
page 192);
(2) On October 6, 1726
William Davis and William Bland received another grant for 195 acres on
the north side of the Occoquan adjoining William Bland, James Bland and
Francis Stone (Book B, page 7);
(3) On October 11,
1726 Joshua Davis of Stafford received a grant for 328 acres adjoining
Bull Run and Francis Stone (Book B, page 12). On April 8, 1735 he
sold this land to Edward Berry (Prince William Deed Book B, pages 432-2);
(4) On July 11, 1727
Francis STone received a grant for 139 acres on the main Occoquan River
adjoining William Bland (Book B, page 89);
(5) On February 25,
1728/29 Thomas Davis of Stafford received a grant for 370 acres on the
branches of the Occoquan adjoining William Bland and William Champ (Book
B, page 185);
(6) On February 28,
1728/29 Richard Crooper (Crupper) received a grant for 181 acres on the
south side of the main Occoquan River about four miles above the Falls
opposit Sandy Run (Book B, page 195). This establishes the location
of all the foregoing grants as in the vicinity of Hoadley;
(7) On March 4, 1728/29
William Davis received a grant for 200 acres on the south side of Bull
Run near the Russia Branch (Book B, page 201);
(8) On January 21,
1729/30 William Davis received a grant for 320 acres on the north side
of Bull Run and Cubb Run, adjoining Nathaniel Russell and John Russell
(Book C, page 93);
(9) On September 12,
1730 Thomas Davis received a grant for 211 acres on the lower side of Bull
Run and on Buckhall Branch, adjoining lands of George Reeves (Book C, page
69);
(10) On July 7, 1731
Thomas Davis received a grant for 250 acres on the south side of Bull Run,
adjoining Joshua Davis, Arrington, George Reeves and others (Book C, page
185);
(11) On May 30, 1739
Thomas Davis received a grant for 30 acres adjoining his own lands (Book
E, page 83). On August 27, 1739 he conveyed this land by deed of
gift to Margaret Evans (Prince William Deed Book C, page 204). She
was the widow of his son John Davis who died in Prince William in 1738
(Will Book C, pages 156-157);
(12) On May 11, 1740
William Davis (now of Prince William as the County had then been split
from Stafford) received a grant for 66 acres, being confirmatory of the
deed of Mary 4, 1728/29 as to 200 acres, plus 463 additional acres, adjoining
Crupper's Cabin Branch, Buckhall Branch, Russia Branch and lands of Milton
Conner and Howson Hooe (Book E, page 247).
(13) On September 8,
1788 William Davis, Jr. received a grant for 21 acres adjoining lands of
Hugh Davis, Posey, Newman and others (Prince William Deed Book T, page
78)."

"William Davis, who had received
land grants in Prince William referred to above was born in the 1600's.
He married Ellen Bland, daughter of James Bland, on of his neighbors in
Prince William (See Bland Chart). McPherson at page 100 reports that
William Davis was the son of David Davis of Maryland, who had come from
Wales. That statement probably arose from confusion by the author
of our ancestor William Davis, with the other William Davis who as recited
hereafter came from Charles County, Maryland, and died in Prince William
in 1798.
William Davis died in Prince
William in 1755 leaving a will which has been lost naming his wife Ellen
Bland Davis and his son Isaac Davis as executors. Benjamin Grayson,
Gent. and George Britt were sureties on the bond of the executors which
was filed April 28, 1756 (Prince William Order Book 1755-56, page 220).
In addition to their son Isaac, William and Ellen Davis had sons William
and Joshua. It is not know whether they also had daughters.
By a deed dated July 1, 1766
Isaac and William Davis Jr. agreed to a division of 607 acres on Brushy
Run, which had been patented to their father William Davis on May 11, 1740
as shown above and willed to them by him. Isaac received 342 acres
and William received 265 acres (Prince William Deed Book G, page 380-1).
By deed dated July 3, 1766 William sold his 265 acres to Howson Hooe (Deed
Book Q, page 381)."

"Thomas Davis, who like his
brother William Davis, acquired large tracts of land in Prince William,
died in 1753 leaving a will naming his wife Judith as executrix (Ljungstedt,
Volume 1, page 5 and Volume 3, page 46). The will has been lost but
a Court order dated April 6, 1779 recites that in his will Thomas Davis
left certain of his lands to his grandsons David and Thomas Davis (Prince
William Deed Book U, page 47)."

"Isaac Davis married Elizabeth
Kincheloe in Prince William before 1749. His plantation lay on both
sides of the Occoquan River near Davis Ford."

"In 1764 Isaac Davis and
William Tyler leased from John Murray an ordinary at Dumfries with all
its equipment (Deed Book Q, page 259). On July 9, 1766 Tyler sold
to Isaac Davis six negroes, a horse and farm products and Isaac agreed
that Tyler could buy them back at specified prices (Deed Book Q, page 439),
and on February 11, 1768 John Blanset (Blancett) sold Isaac Davis some
household goods (Deed Book R, page 7).
Isaac Davis died in Prince
William about 1771 leaving his wife Elizabeth surviving. He left
no will with the result that his real estate passed under the laws then
in effect to his eldest son William Davis, Jr. Apparently Isaac Davis
had expressed a wish that after his death his son William would divide
the lands with William's brothers and sisters, and William, Jr. took appropriate
steps to carry out his father's wishes."

Virginia, before her parents moved to Stafford (later Prince William)about

Kincheloe Davis, widow of Isaac Davis, married Rhodam Blancett of Prince
William. Apparently some question arose as to her right of dower
in the property of Isaac Davis which had been inherited by William Davis,
Jr., and on December 19, 1779 she and her new husband Blancett, joined
with William Davis, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth and with Jesse DAvis in
conveying to Howson Hooe all their interests in 160 acres, part of two
tracts one of which had been granted to William Davis in 1741 and one of
which had been granted to patrick Hamrick in 1740. this was probably
part of the 265 acres which William Davis, Isaac's brother, sold to Hooe
in 1766 (Deed Book U, pages 113-1150)."
"Also on January 14, 1780
the Blancetts joined with William Davis, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth in
conveying to John Wilkinson of Fairfax a tract of 310 acres part of which
had been given to William Davis, Jr. by his grandfather William Davis and
part of which had been bought from Hamrick (Deed Book U, pages 91-94);
and on December 2, 1782 Hugh Davis, who had married Jane Davis and John
Posey Newman who had married Mary Davis, daughters of Isaac Davis, deceased,
made an agreement with Rhodam Blancett designed to insure that Blancett
and his wife Elizabeth would receive tracts of 114 acres and 93 acres out
of the various parcels which Isaac Davis owned when he died (Deed Book
U, page 369)."
"At the same time the Blancetts
executed a deed conveying to Hugh Davis and John Posey Newman all of Elizabeth
Blancett's rights of dower in two parcels of 470 acres and 100 acres on
Quantico Neck (Deed Book U, page 370). Also on June 6, 1786 the Blancetts
conveyed their interest in 60 acres to William Davis, Jr. (Deed Book W,
page 335)."
"On March 20, 1790 Rhodam
Blancett joined with Travis Davis in conveying to Hugh Davis and John Posey
Newman the tracts of land on the Crooked Branch of the Occoquan which Isaac
Davis bouth from Moses Bland and David Davis and which passed to William
Davis, Jr. when Isaac Davis died intestate and which William Davis, Jr.

"On April 23 and 24, 1771
William Davis, Jr. by instruments of lease and release recorded June 3,
1771 conveyed to his brothers Presley, Cornelius, Isaac, John, Warren and
Travis and his sisters Jane and Mary in compliance with his father's wish
all the lands which his father owned at the date of his death and that
William, Jr. inherited as his eldest son, with the exception of the Buckhall
tract where he then lived, a tract of 100 acres purchased by his father
from Hambrick and a tract of 50 acres on Morgan's Point at the mouht of
Powell's Creek (Deed Book R, pages 318-22). For reasons unknown William,
Jr's brothers Jesse, Henry and John were not named in these instruments,
but Jesse signed as a witness signifying his approval."

date is undecipherable but which was recorded also on February 4, 1777

Davis, brother of Isaac and William. He lived near Brentsville and
married Mary Foster, daughter of Rober Foster who lived near the Davises.
Robert Foster was born in 1711 and his father William Foster had received
in the 1720's grants for lands opposite Bloom Hill, which later became
the home of the Cockrells. (Anyone interested in the Fosters should
consult Wynn's Southern Lineages.)"

one child named Elizabeth. Joshua died intestate in 1760 and his

"Elizabeth was raised by
her grandfather Robert Foster and after his death in 1768 by her uncle
William Davis. William Harris who was living in lower Prince William
in 1777 near the Stafford line was summoned to take part in the Revolution.
He suggested to Elizabeth that if she would hire a substitute to serve
for him in the Revolution he would marry her. She agreed to this
proposal and they were married at the home of her uncle William Davis near
Brentsville. Shortly thereafter on August 2, 1777 Harris entered
into an agreement to sell Elizabeth's land to William Carr."
"Also in 1793 Elizabeth married
Captain Thomas Fletcher (but no mention is made of any of them getting
a divorce as in those days divorce only could be obtained by acts of the
Legislature)."
"Harris died in 1822, and
a dispute then rose over the ownership of the lands in Fauquier which Elizabeth
acquired after her mother's death. A lawsuit was started over the
matter in Fauquier County, but the case was later transferred to Culpeper
County by the Judge in Fauquier who was disqualified from acting because
of some personal interest int the matter. Our ancestor, Hugh Davis,
then age 72, and Elizabeth Foster, daughter of James Foster, son of Robert,
both appeared as witnesses in 1831 in support of the claim of Elizabeth
(3 Kentucy Genealogist, page 60). Hugh Davis testified that he and
Elizabeth had been raised together in his father's home after the death
of her father and mother Joshua and Mary Foster Davis, and that he had
seen Elizabeth in Kentucky when he moved there after the War. William
Melton who was a neighbor of the Davises and Fosters also testified (Culpeper
County Land Causes No. 2, page 79). In an 1860 map the land involved
in this lawsuit was shown as "Davis" land (Library of Congress Map No.
1255)."

to Kentucky, pretended to be a War hero and called himself Major William
Harrison. His wife Elizabeth later joined him but he soon deserted
her and married at different dates two other women."

"William Davis, the third
son of William and Ellen Bland, was our ancestor. He was married
at least twice as his las wife Mary Grigsby was born in 1752 (See Grisgby
Chart) and his son Hugh was born in 1758. Therefore, William was
probably born in the 1730's or before. He lived most of his life
near Brentsville in Prince William. In 1762 he received a commission
as an Ensign in the Virginia Militia (Prince William Order Book page 206).
He was appointed in 1800 by the General Assembly to a committee to select
a cout site for Prince William, Fauquier and Fairfax (2 Hening N. S., page
242). Also he was involved either as a witness or a party in the
famous case of Hite b. Lord Fairfax, 4 Call. (8 Va.) 42 which related to
the title to large land holdings in Fauquier (Dickinson, page Lvi)."
"William Davis died in 1812
leaving his wife Mary who died in 1831. His children as listed in
his will recorded April 28, 1812 in Fauquier County will Book 5 at page
259."

and their son-in-law George Selecman were named as executors of his wil.
It is belived that William Davis also had a son Joshua Davis and Cole list
Joshua in his book."
"In Southern Lineages, by
Adeline Evans Wynn, it is stated that William Davis and Mary Grigsby Davis
had a son Travis who moved to Arkansas, and reference is made to a cousin
William N. Wyatt who was traveling in eastern Arkansas in 1836 and visited
"the widow Davis, the wife of Travis Davis, and the daughter of our old
Aunt Molly Davis" (Wynn's Travel Diary, page 20). If the "widow Davis"
was the daughter of Mary Grigsby Davis, then Travis Davis was not her son.
Travis Davis was the son of a William Davis, who like our ancestor lived
in Prince William but died in Fauquier, but Travis was not the son of our
ancestors. The father of Travis Davis left a will which was filed
in 1815 in Prince William in Will Book K at page 366 naming his sons John,
Travis and Benjamin Davis, his daughter Katherine Whitley, his son-in-law
Darby Byrne and the wife of his deceased son Benson Davis. Apparently
his wife had died before him."

"Jesse (1755-1818) married
in 1780 Nancy Melton (1759- ). On April 2, 1784
they conveyed 110 acres to Cornelius Kincheloe (Deed Book U, page 494).

"Soon after the close of
the Revolution Jesse Davis and several of his brothers and sisters, including
his sister Jane and her husband Hugh Davis moved to a place later called
"Davis Settlement" on Simpson's Creek near Chaplin Fork in Nelson County,
Kentucky. They built a fort there which was known as Fort Kincheloe
but later as "Burnt Station" after it was attached by the Indians.
It is believed that their mother and step-father Rhodam Blancett also went
with them to Kentucly. In 1793 Blancett received a land grant of
1057 acres in Bourbon County. There were Blancetts living in Jefferson
County in 1785 (6 Filson Club Quarterly). The Davises also received
large land grants in Kentucky (Index for Old Kentucky Surveys and Grants,
by Kentucky Historical Socity (1975), pages 13, 44 and 45)."
"Jesse Davis was a Captain
in the Revolution and served under the immediate command of General Washington,
who in General Orders commended him for his bravery (Virginia Gazett January
23, 1778). Benjamin and Moses Wickliffe served under him and a Sarah
Mayhugh (of Hoadley) went with their company for three years (Burgess,
page 1317). Jesse's wido Nancy Melton Davis was allowed a pension
(No. W 8652) and a Bounty Land Warrant No. 2325 for 300 acres. Jesse
also received land grants of 5100 acres in Jefferson County and grants
of 1700 acres in Nelson County, Kentucky (Virginia Land Grant Books A:
128, 4: 536, 537, 608; 7: 279 and 10: 489). Jesse was born in 1755
and died in 1818 (48 D.A.R. Lineages, page 1)."
"Jesse left a will dated
April 5, 1818 which was recorded in Nelson County February 15, 1819 and
probated at Richmond, Virginia November 16, 1830, naming his wife Nancy,
his sons Presley, Elijah, Wilson L., William M., and Jesse, Jr. and his
daughters Elizabeth, Harriet and Nancy. By a codicil Nancy was cut
off 'for just cause.'"

"Elijah. He wrote a
report about his family in 1870 at age 83 when still living in Nelson County.
He stated that his family lived in Prince William, that his great-grandfather
was William Davis and his great-grandmother a Bland; that his grandfather
Isaac lost his life in a fire before the Revolution; that his grandmother
was a Kincheloe; that his father Jesse joined the Army in the Revolution
with six brothers, and only Jesse who was a Captain and one brother returned
from the War; and that the family moved to Nelson County after the War.
He also wrote that the Davises cam from Wales, and the Kincheloes from
Ireland, that his mother was a Melton from England and his grandmother
was a Ross from Scotland (2 Kentucky Genealogist, page 148)."

that Jesse was born in Prince William and was Hugh's first cousin and also

on February 8, 1780. She was doubtless related to Moses Melton and
his wife Mary and Richard Melton and his wife Margaret, all of whom were

"Hugh Davis, son of William,
enlisted in 1776 in Prince William County for service in the Revolutionary
War. He served two years as a sergeant in Captain George McCormick's
Company of Colonel John Gibson's 13th Virginia Regiment; and was in the
battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. About two weeks after
being discharged, in passing through Philadelphia on his way home, he enlisted
in Captain Rudolph's Company of Colonel Lee's Troop of Horse, served at
the storming of Stoney Point, the battle of Paulus Hook, was severely wounded
by a ball through his knee in a skirmish near Trenton in November 1779
and was discharged in 1780, being unfit for duty. He was allowed
pension on his application executed in 1819 (Pension No. S10126)."
"As stated above Hugh Davis
married his cousin Jane Davis. This marriage must have occurred soon
after his return home from the War, as Hugh was stated to be married to
Jane Davis in the deed of December 2, 1782 relating to lands of her father
Isaac Davis (Deed Book U, page 369). Soon thereafter he and his wife
went with his cousins to Kentucky and lived there at least until 1790 (Heineman).
He later returned to Prince William where he was living when he applied
for his pension in 1819. Neither the papers then filed nor those
filed in later years mention his wife. According to family tradition
he married Jennie Selecman, but if so it must have been before he married
Jane Davis or after here death. Cole states that he was advised by
S. Ellis Davis that Hugh C. Davis married Jennie Selecman, but that he
could find no confirmation of this fact and that if she married a Hugh
Davis it was probably the Revolutionary War
veteran and not his son Hugh
C. Davis."

"Hugh C. Davis entered service
in the Army on August 28, 1812 soon after Congress declared war against
Great Britain and he was sent to Norfolk where he served a full term and
became a sergeant. As the British fleet which was reported to be
heading for the Potomac River had not appeared he was sent home in January
1814. On arrival he found all his friends preparing to go to a place
on the Potomac in Fairfax County called White House to intercept the British
Fleet then coming up the Potomac. At page 204 of the book entitled
"The Estate of George Washington, deceased" by Eugene E. Prussing (1927)
is a map of Mt. Vernon estate showing the "White House" on the southerly
side of Dogue Creek. Hugh C. Davis joined his friends and they set
off immediately and went to White House where they joined Captain George
W. Jackson's 36th Virginia Regiment and he was assigned to a cannon which
was to fire on the ships when they appeared. On February 1, 1814
he was severely wounded when the cannon exploded, shattering his left arm.
His father Hugh Davis came and took him home, and he was later discharged
at Dumfries. He married Sarah Frances (Sallie) Fairfax on January
2, 1817. She was the daughter of William Fairfax (See Fairfax Chart)."
"Hugh C. Davis later applied
for a pension and in support of his claim Sergeant Joseph Bronaugh, Craven
Peak, John Carter, Cumberland Pearson and Hugh's cousin Travis Davis who
were all at the battle of White House supported his claim which was allowed
(Pension No. 13566 and BLV 17038)."
"Hugh C. Davis died on May
10, 1854. His wife Sarah (Sallie) Fairfax Davis then applied in 1855
for a land warrant which was allowed (No. 39985) and she received a land
warrant No. 25547. Hugh's uncle Redmon Davis filed an affidavit in
support of her claim."

MONSIE LEE AMONETT ENSOR
I Moncie Ensor, being of sound mind
disposing memory and knowing the incertainty of life & the certainity
of death do make publish and declare this to be my last will and testament.
1st I want all my just
debts and funeral expenses first paid.
2nd I want all of my Estate
both real and personal Equally divided with my children, my Executors to
use the proceeds of farm and also personal property sufficicient to raise
and care for children.
3rd I want my Executors to
rent or have cultivated my lands as they shall see best for children, but
said lands not to be sold until youngest childe is twenty one years of
age.
4th I want the lands sold
when youngest child is 21 years of age if children can agree in disposing
of lands they can do so. if not to be sold privately or publicly
as Executors think best.
5th I nominate and appoint
T.N. and J.A. Amonett my Executors to this my last will and testament and
that they shall not be required to give any bond for the same and I here
by revoke all other wills by me maid. don't require my Executors
to make any settlement with the court. only probating will.

"Pleasant Grove Methodist
Church was organized in 1815. The church was first called 'Rock Spring
Episcopal Methodist Church.' This church was named Rock Spring because
of a large spring which flowed through a crevice between two very large
rocks at the head of Rock Spring Valley. The first services were
held in the homes of families living near this spring. This was then
Jackson County. Two week Camp Meetings were held near this spring
every year and people came from miles away to attend these services.
They traveled by horse-back, ox carts and in wagons. They brought
provisions, stock feed and stayed the entire two weeks.
The Tennessee Conference
was organized November 12, 1812 at Fountain Head, Tennessee. This
conference was organized just three years prior to the organization of
Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. Bishop Francis Asbury, President
of the Tennessee Conference came and held a revival at the site of this
camp ground. This revival was a wonderful success.
The people of this community
were so interested in the Lord's work that they decided to build a church
house. The ground for this church was donated by John Boyd, and his
son Ephriam Boyd. The following men were appointed Trustees and the
deed to the church was made to them: Simon Carlisle, Wesley Carlisle,
Isaac E_____ Ferrell, Joseph Jared, Saunders Presley, James Lee, Jr. and
William Blackburn. This church was built in 1832 and it was also
used as a schoolhouse. A grove of large Beech trees was on this plot
of ground and the name of the church was changed from 'Rock Spring' to
'Pleasant Grove.'"
