CARDENS IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
These notes summarise information mostly from Jim Read of Kentucky, received in 1990, typed for ready access in case I decide to put together a document on the subject.
PART I. INFORMATION FROM JIM READ
John Carden was born in Virginia in 1800 and emigrated to North Carolina.
He was a descendant of the Cardens that were British Soldiers in the Revolutionary
War of 1776 to 1783, there being five of them engaged in that war.
- part of a letter written 1964 or 1965 by Mary Anne Lanning
(nee Carden) born 1888, referring to John Warner Carden her grandfather,
born 1826.
John Warner Carden married a descendant of Michael Holt who came to
the 2nd Germanna Colony of Virginia in 1717, and was almost certainly German,
and went back to Germany to try to enlist the services of an Evangelical
Minister. His children married Germans. I therefore believe
my Cardens to have been Germans, a German/English marriage being very unlikely
at that time in this country.
-paraphrase of part of a letter to me dated 15 Jan 1990 from
Jim Read: some of his information came from "The Descendants of Michael
Holt," by Mrs Arch B Marshall, privately published in 1964.
Jeremiah Holt was a Revolutionary serviceman.
-from a letter from Howard Patton to Jim Read dated 4 Jan
1988, quoting Claribel's book.
Leonard Cardin, James Carden and John Cordin were included among about
100 petitioners to the Delegates of Virginia, 14 May 1777, asking that
natives of Great Britain not supporting the American cause be compelled
to leave the State.
-page 280 of the Daughters of the American Revolution
Magazine (photocopy received from Jim Read).
My brother ... established ... Robert Carden is the head of the Carden
Clan of (?) Co, MO. ... The story goes thus five brothers was sent
from England to fight in the Revolutionary War. One was Robert as I have
mentioned. When the War ended they stayed here. Robert settled
in Tenn (?). Others in (?) and as the story goes the son of Robert - name
not known - married the daughter of the Revolutionary General called Moore...
-from a delightful letter from E.F.Carden ("Ermie" Carden, great-grandson
of John Warner Carden) written Sept 1968 when he was 82 years of age.
The photocopy received from Jim Read is not very clear.
CARDEN, JOHN. Major in Prince of Wales's American Regiment.
In 1780 he was in command of the post at Hanging Rock, when, assaulted
by Sumpter, he exposed himself to censure and disgrace, by resigning to
Captain Rouslet of the Infantry of the Legion, in the heat of the battle.
He died in April, 1783.
-from p.294 of Vol 1 of "Biographical sketches of Loyalists of
the American Revolution, with an historical essay" by Lorenzo Sabine.
Little, Brown & Company, 1864. Extract received from Jim Reed.
p.478 (headed Continental Prisoners of War):-
Charlestown, SC, Feb 25 1781. Roster of Officers in the Right Honourable Lord Montague's Corps included Montague, Charles, Lieutenant Colonel, Lieutenant Jonathan Carden and Captain William Lowe.
To be inserted in Order Books, 29 Mar 1781, Dates of Rank, including Lieutenant Carden [Does this mean he was made Lieutenant as from this date, the above mention being provisional?]
Orders, Charlestown, Feb 9 1781 to Captain William Lowe, recruiting officer, to enlist prisoners on board prison ships to raise a regiment to serve three years; they are not expected to fight against their countrymen in America, for West Indies. signed by Charles Montagu.
Regiment inspected at Charlestown, May 3 1781 when additional bonuses were paid, etc.
Embarked on 24 May. Received new issue 18 August when the battalion
landed at Fort Augusta.
from p.479 (headed Loyalists in the Southern Campaign, Volume
I)
Dates of Commissions by General Dalling: includes Lieutenant,
Carden, Jonathan, 2-18-1781.
-photocopy apparently of a page spread from the above book by
Sabine (odd that it should be typewritten?), received from Jim Read.
There are no published official lists of Loyalist Officers, and the
notes regarding John and Hans Carden are the only information we can provide.
Hans Carden Ensign 60th Foot (Royal Americans) 16 June 1773
Lieutenant ditto 6 Feb 1777
Captain ditto 1 Feb 1780
Died sometime in 1782, but the date, place and cause of death
are not known. John Carden Ensign 60th Foot (Royal Americans) 7 Aug
1773
Lieutenant ditto 28 April 1775
" 19th Foot 20 Mar 1779
" 5th Foot 27 Jan 1780
" 36th Foot 13 April 1782
Retired from Army in 1783 -
-letter from Ministry of Defence Library, 31 July 1967, to Mr
H L Patton
And then there are confusing entries in "Marriage Notices" in SC. American
General Gazette and The Royal Gazette 1776-1782 (pub in Charleston):(1)
Royal Gazette, March 17 1781. "Last Thurs. evening Major John Carden
of the Prince of Wales' Am. Regiment, to Miss Judith Wragg, dau of the
Honourable Wm. Wragg, Esq., deceased" (2) Wed., Nov 28 1781.
"On the 19th instant was married at Beaufort, Major John Carden, of the
Prince of Wales' Am. Regiment, to Miss Kitty Hazard, dau. of Wm. Hazard,
Esq, of that place." Now my question: Is this the same John
whose first wife Judith died or are there two Johns in the Prince of Wales
Am. Regiment? Quick work for one John!
-from letter from Ruth Carden Stuart (Mrs Baron M Stuart) to
H L Patton, Sept 14 1969.
The five brothers who came from England prior to Revolutionary War:
James Carden, father of Lewis Carden ... settled near Manchester
Robert Carden ?
Leonard Carden ?
Reuben Carden, settled ... adjoining his brother James.
John Carden
James Carden born 1747 died 1842 (one of the five brothers who came
from England), followed by list of sons of James and Elizabeth Carden who
settled in North Carolina.
- presumably attached to the above letter.
Now Mecklenburg Co.Va. might be what we are looking for because if you
check the 1790 Census you will find the following: CARDEN, JOHN, JOHN JR.,
LEONARD, also these people were in a Militia Outfit around the close of
the revolution. I forgot what book I saw it in. And another
book I read about crests, mottoes, etc., about the revolutionary, or before,
on the families that came to the Colonies, the MOTTO (FIDE ET AMORE) is
only on 3 families Crests besides Carden's, and if true I can say we originated
in TEMPLEMORE COUNTY TIPPERARY IRELAND.
- from letter to H L Patton from S/Sgt Roy W Carden dated June
28, 1968.
