What follows is some notes made before discovering his death date of
2-3-1920. "The estimated death date between 1911 and 1922 is based on two
things
1st The combination of a law suit and a family legend. James Jimmerson
Carden was in a lawsuit (1888 - 1890) in North Carolina. The case made
it to the NC supreme court. He lost this
lawsuit to his younger brother Gaston Carden. Family legend says that James
Jarvis Carden, James Jimmerson's son, met Gaston Carden on the steps of
the church during James Jimmerson's funeral and refused Gaston entrance
to the ceremony. An earliest estimated death date of 1902 is based on the
assumption that James Jarvis was a grown man at the time of this incident.
James Jarvis's son, Philip, does not remember this grandfather but remembers
his grandmother very well. This probably means that James Jimmerson died
before Philip was a much beyond toddler. That would put James Jimmerson's
death before the mid 1920's.
"2nd Methodist Church conference records puts a J. J. Carden as a preacher
in the Ralegh area in 1911. This is probably James Jimmerson Carden. However
it is possible that it could have been the younger JJ, James Jarvis. He
would have been 27 at the time. Since there is not even a whisper of a
family legend that the younger JJ was ever a preacher it seems more likely
that it was the older JJ."

It is interesting to note that the Confederate army unit in which James Jimmerson Carden was a Sergeant spent much of the war in Southeastern North Carolina containing an army of Yankees on the coast. He was in the Calvary and may have covered much of the territory he was later to pastor.
It is also interesting to note that his wife, Sally Foy, was from this
same area - Maysville, Jones County, NC. We can only speculate as to whether
he met her during the war or afterwards.

he took "location." That means he gave up his ordination, his membership
'm the annual conference, and did not take an appointment. This sometimes
happened when a man was struggling to support his family and needed more
income than the church afforded. Often these men found other work and served
as local preachers, not being moved around by the bishop but assisting
the "traveling preacher" by holding regular services in a small congregation
that the traveling preacher reached once every few weeks. We cannot tell
you for sure that this is what happened to Rev. Carden.
Taking it one line at a time:
1874 - 1876 I at first thought that Denver might have referred to Denver, NC in Western North Carolina. Denver is in Lincoln County, NC about 30 miles Northwest of Charlotte. An additional query to the organization above contradicted this theory saying that the only Denver Conference of which they were aware was Denver, Colorado.
There are two towns named Neuse in North Carolina. This one probably means the one in Lenoir County about 35 miles West of New Bern, NC.
1877 - 1879 This probably means the town of Robeson about 40 miles Southwest of Fayetteville, NC.
1880 Whiteville is about 50 miles West of Wilmington, NC.
1881 Jonesboro is about 25 miles Northeast of Fayetteville, NC.
1882 Swanquarter is right on the coast of North Carolina about 60 miles Northeast of New Bern, NC in Hyde County.
1883 Nashville, NC is in Nash County about 50 miles Northeast of Raleigh, NC.
1884 This probably refers to Prince Georges county in Maryland. It is the county to the east of Washington, DC.
1885 - 1887 This one is difficult in that there are many towns named
Moorefield and Springfield to choose from. There are only two that seem
to come in a pair anywhere near Baltimore. One is in Hardy Co., WV just
to the South of the western end of Maryland. The other is in central southern
Virginia.
The Hardy Co. WV has additional credence because it is in West Virginia.
On Philip Carden's birth certificate it lists his father's birthplace as
West Virginia. Phil Carden's father, James Jarvis Carden, was James Jimmerson
Carden's son. James Jarvis' birth date is given as 1884 which is close
in time to this assignment.
The Moorefield in Virginia is just North of Stokes Co., NC just two
counties from James Jimmerson's homeplace.
1888 - 1890 It is during this period of time that James Jimmerson is involved in a lawsuit with his younger brother. This may have had something to do with the conference more or less losing track of him.
The 1870 census shows a J J Carden, single, in Duplin County, (also in this same general area) working as a mechanic (J J Carden's father's trade)
Another letter from the Methodist Church the next month confirmed almost
all of the above and added to it.

Dear Mr. Carden:
Pardon my delay in answering your letter of December 7 for information on James J. Carden, but material is scattered between my home and our Conference Archives in Raleigh and I had to search volumes of Conference Journals. It is unfortunate that no obituary exists, but James J. Carden died after 1911.
1868 J. J. Carden "supplied" our church at
Wilson, North Carolina Conference
1869 Received by the Conference "On Trial"
and assigned to Magnolia
1870 Continued on trial (normal procedure)
and assigned to Jones Circuit
1871 Received into Full Connection and transferred
to St. Louis Conference
1874 Received into North Carolina Conference
from Denver Conference and assigned to Neuse Circuit (Remote coastal area
- Punishment?)
1875 Continued on Neuse Circuit (Must have
liked it!)
1876 Continued on Neuse Circuit (210 members)
1877 throught 1879 Assigned Robeson Circuit
(Central Southern area)
1880 Assigned to Whiteville (Halfway back
to the coast)
1881 Assigned to Jonesboro (610 members in
several churches - best appointment
1882 Assigned to Swan Quarter (Back to the
coast)
1883 Assigned to Nashville (Central Eastern
area)
1884 Transferred to Baltimore Conference
1889 Received into North Carolina Conference
and "located" at his request
(This term indicates retirement since
preachers "traveled.")
1911 This time J. J. Carden is listed as a
Local Preacher in or near Raleigh
From the obituary of another preacher, who died in 1935, I find that Sallie Smith Gattis was a granddaughter of James J. Carden and Thomas Jefferson Gattis (both Methodist preachers) and was married to John Robert Poe on November 26, 1936.
Regarding the Foy family, I want to share my limited personal knowledge and tell you where you can get more information. I remember that there were a few prominent families living in plantation style just north of where highway US-17 leaves New Hanover County (Wilmington) going north to Onslow County (Jacksonville). This area is in the extreme southeastern part of Pender County. One old house is located on the right-hand side of the main highway and I stopped to ask about it and was told that it was the Foy house (still standing some fifteen years ago). From my Pender County history I read that George W. Foy was a member of Co. K. 3rd Infantry, CSA , and was wounded at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863.
Our United Methodist Church in that area dates back to 1824 and one of their church buildings was dedicated in 1874, in spite of the earliest deed we could find prepared in 1850 (another deed was prepared in 1873). The name was changed in 1910 to Wesleyan Chapel. I have met the associate named Karen C. Howell, P. O. Box 10472, Wilmington, Nc 28405. You may use my name as a reference and ask her to find out information about the Foy Family or write the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society, P. O. Box 813, Wilmington, NC 28405 (old address).
Sincerely yours,
C. Franklin Grill
Conference Historian
PS: Other church deeds name Foy trustees:
1910 - J. T. Foy and F. M. Foy
1943 - Reference to F. M. Foy homestead in community called Scotts
Hill
After her death a certificate was found among the effects of Ruth Carden
Lowe, James Jimmerson Carden's grandaughter. It reads:
"To all true and faithful nobles of the mystic shrine know ye that
the worthy noble James J Carden who had signed his name in the margin hereof
was regularly received and admitted and constituted a noble of the mystic
shrine in Oasis temple of Charlotte, NC on the 16th day of June 1904 and
that he has duly enrolled as such upon the records of the order in testimony
whereof we have here unto subscribed our names and affixed the seal of
the Imperial Council of North America."
Elsewhere it has Certificate #101173, camels, a whale, palm trees, a gold seal, some guys sitting in a tent, a sun, moon, stars, pyramids, a sphinx, some scribbles that are probably signatures, and the date June 6, 1876 which we're guessing is the date the Charlotte, NC, Lodge was founded.
A query was sent to the current Charlotte Masonic Lodge to see if more information can be obtained. James Jimmerson Carden's son's name was James Jarvis Carden. Family legend is that they were both Mason's. In addition to a general query we also asked if it was possible that this certificate could have been awarded to someone just 20 years old?
This response was received on March 15, 1999 which makes it apparent that the certificate described above was for James Jimmerson Carden.
Hey Thor--
I've got the following, and I haven't thought through how it all goes together.
Carden, J J Sr., Durham, NC
Eno Lodge 210
Reinstated by Charter 8-4-1904
Died 2-3-1920
Eno Lodge is in Durham, adjacent to Orange County
(Eno lost its charter in 1896 and got it back in 1904)
Carden, J. J.
Bayboro 331
Initiated 9-26-1876
passed 10-16-1876
raised 10-19-1876
Demitted 4-28-1877
Carden J J
Mt Vernon 359
Affiliated- Charter Member
Demitted 6-12-1884
Charter Date 12-5-1878
(the later two records look like JJ moved his membership from 331 to
359.
359 is in Oriental, about 10 miles from Bayboro)
Shrine membership for a 20 year old is very unlikely. Shrine membership has always required Masonic membership. We have always required applicants be at least 21.
