In researching this history it is important to note that Bradley co., Tn wasn’t incorporated until 1836. Also, the county changed over time becoming James co. which was later divided up with part going to Hamilton co. and the rest melding
back into Bradley co. (see book “the lost county of Tennessee” re james county).

At the time the 1820/1830 census was taken, the area now known as Chattanooga was listed on maps as Indian territory. Based on info from the national archives, these people were living among the Indians. Also important, at the time the census listed people in households as either white or colored; the standard was that anyone not white was considered colored for the purpose of the census. This means that if an Indian (or anyone other than caucasion) was part of the family or living in the house, they were listed as colored.
