Brighton England Cardens
In the past couple of weeks, I have spent two long days going through both microfilm and original documents of the early 1600s - it feels a bit creepy touching documents that are almost 400 years old! I have also attached two photos from these. One shows Richard Carden (born c1579) signing his mark (which I have highlighted in yellow) as a Churchwarden at Falmer Parish Church in both 1623 and 1624 - which must be the earliest surviving "handwriting" of any of these Cardens. The other shows the birth of his son Richard in 1607 - it is not the birth that is interesting, rather the handwriting. I first put it on my web site as "Richarde Cardon the sonne of Richard Cardon was Baptised the vjth Daye of December." - but I quickly realised my mistake and replaced it the next day before (I hope) too many people noticed my ignorance! It may be where some of the transcription errors come from - but if you look at the 3 letter "e"s in the final word December, they are identical to what looks like an "o" but is really an "e" in Carden.
