Descendants of William Likens

Generation No. 1

1.  WILLIAM1 LIKENS was born Abt. 1741 in Berks County, PA, and died Aft. 1810 in Warren County, KY.

Notes for WILLIAM LIKENS:
1. - William Likens listed in 1800 census of Warren County KY.
2. - From First Surveyers book, William Likins enters 200 acres of 2nd rate land in Warren County by virtue of certificate # 1943 south of Green River beginning at a black oak on the top of the knob running 22 ET 180 poles thence northeastwardly at right angles for Quant so as to include his improvements.

Children of WILLIAM LIKENS are:
2. i. MARK2 LYKINS, b. 1761; d. 1837, Ohio County, KY.
ii. MARTHA LIKENS, b. 1764; m. THOMAS WILSON, November 07, 1794, Montgomery County, VA.

Notes for MARTHA LIKENS:
1. - There is a marriage record for Martha Likens and Thomas Wilson in Montgomery County VA on Nov. 7, 1794.  On the same date and place, her brother Mark married Mary Smith (first of three wives).
2, - It is noted that Montgomery County VA records show that Mark Likens and his father William and his Uncle Marcus Likens were among the men assigned to the Bent Mountain District in Revolutionary War era.  They were in Martin's Company and later this became Wilson's Company.  What relation, if any, Captain Wilson was to Thomas Wilson (spouse of Martha Likens) is not known.  No effort has been made to trace this Thomas Wilson and Martha Likens family.

3. iii. JAMES M. LIKENS, b. 1779, VA.
iv. SALLY LIKENS, b. Abt. 1780; m. JOHN NEVILLE, May 26, 1798, Warren, County KY.

Notes for SALLY LIKENS:
1.  Marriages of Warren County (Louisville Public Library) list the marriage of Sally Likens to John Darvel in April 1798 by John Hightower.  It also list her marriage bond for John Nevill,  with security by Henry Grider, on 26 May 1798 by John Hightower.  This is taken as the same man with some error in transcribing names.  Parents of Sally are not mentioned but it is surely William as there is no other Likens in Warren County in 1798 except Mark and his marriage to Mary Smith was in 1794 in VA, his second marriage to Nancy Smith was in 1796 and his third marriage to Jane Keown was in  1809.  By elimination, Sally was the daughter of William Likens.
2.      There is no other information know about this Sally Likens and her family but it is admitted that no real effort has been made on these people.

4. v. NANCY ANN LIKENS, b. 1790.
5. vi. ROSANNA LIKENS, b. 1793, Montgomery County, VA; d. Aft. 1850, Butler County, KY.
vii. HANNAH LIKENS, b. Abt. 1795; m. JOHN RICHARDSON, March 24, 1810, Warren County  KY.

Notes for HANNAH LIKENS:
1. - Marriages of Warren County (Louisville Public Library) list the marriage of John Richardson on 24 Mar 1810.  The security bond was William Likens

Notes for JOHN RICHARDSON:
1. - Warren County KY marriage records list the marriage of Hannah Likens to
John Richardson on March 24, 1810.  Her father was listed as William Likens

Generation No. 2

2.  MARK2 LYKINS (WILLIAM1 LIKENS) was born 1761, and died 1837 in Ohio County, KY.  He married (1) MARY SMITH November 07, 1794 in Montogomery County VA.  She died Bef. 1796.  He married (2) NANCY SMITH December 04, 1796 in Montgomery County VA, daughter of JACOB SMITH.  She was born Bef. 1782, and died Bef. 1809.  He married (3) JANE "JENNA" KEOWN August 04, 1809 in Warren County KY, daughter of THOMAS KEOWN and BETSY YOUNG.  She was born 1782 in SC, and died Aft. 1850.

Notes for MARK LYKINS:
The three families of Mark Likens, son of William.

Marriage records of Montgomery County VA list the marriage of Mark Likens to Mary Smith on Nov. 7, 1794.  These records do not give any information about parents of either party.  However, the will of Elizabeth Smith, dated 1814 in Warren County KY, bequeaths "three dollars to the heirs of her beloved daughter Polly Likens".  Elizabeth Smith made direct bequest to her other children but to Polly the bequest was to her heirs.  This suggests that by 1814, Mary was dead.   This assumption is supported by the Montgomery County VA marriage of Mark Likens to Nancy Smith, daughter of Jacob Smith, on Dec. 4, 1796.  The other children in the Elizabeth Smith will were listed as sons John, Jacob, David, and Rowland.  In addition to Polly, the daughters listed were Rebecka Shrader, Nancy Whaling, and Catharine (no last name and assumed to be unmarried).

The fact that Elizabeth Smith named Nancy Whaling as a daughter is significant because the biography of T. P. Whaling (Perrins Biographical Section of Warren County KY), states that T. P. Whaling was born in Butler County KY in 1830 and that he was the son of John and Nancy (Smith) Whaling and that both parents were born in VA.  Truly, Nancy Smith (daughter of Elizabeth Smith will of 1814) was not the Nancy Smith that married Mark Likens in Montgomery County VA on Dec. 4, 1796.  It follows then, that since the Montgomery County VA marriage record states that Nancy was the daughter of Jacob Smith, Elizabeth of the 1814 will was not the widow of Jacob.

Warren County KY records list the marriage of Mark Lykins to Jane Kown on Aug. 4, 1809.  Without question, these are the parents of Nathan Likins and grand parents of John H. Likins.  It is the third marriage for Mark.  It appears that Mark's second wife was dead before then.  On Feb. 3, 1814, Elizabeth Lykins, daughter of Mark Lykins, married Reuben Turner in Warren County KY.  Other records show that Elizabeth was born in VA in 1794 so she would have been about 20 when she married.  It is submitted that Elizabeth (Lykins) Turner was the daughter of Mary (AKA Polly) Smith and Mark Likens who were married on Nov. 7, 1794 in Montgomery County VA and that she was born before her parents were married or very shortly thereafter.  As was a common custom, Mark and Polly named their first daughter after the wife's mother, Elizabeth Smith of the 1814 will. Elizabeth and Reuben Turner had a daughter named Nancy born in Warren County KY in 1822 and a son named Mark also born in Warren County KY in 1839.  Elizabeth (Lykins) Turner might have named a daughter for her Aunt Nancy Whaling (sister to Polly Likens in Elizabeth Smith will) or maybe after her stepmother, Nancy Smith (daughter of Jacob), who was Mark's second wife.  It is very probable that the first wife (Polly or Mary) of Mark Likens was a first cousin to his second wife (Nancy, daughter of Jacob Smith).

Land records for Warren County show a close relationship between Mark and William Likens and Jacob Smith.  On July 13, 1796, Mark Likens had his Warren County land surveyed and recorded. On July 11, 1796, Jacob Smith Sr. and Jacob Smith Jr. also had their land surveyed and recorded.  Note that these dates were after the first marriage of Mark and before his second.  These tracts are clearly on the north fork of Ray's Branch that lies between Greencastle and Richardsville on modern maps.  William Likens did not survey and record his land until July 15, 1798 and it too was in the area where Rays Branch joins Barren River.  It is possible that the Smith and Likens lands were adjoining tracts.  At least they were within a circle with less than a two mile radius.  The fact that only a ridge separates Rays Branch from Indian Creek, where the Young and Keown families migrated about 1805, explains the many marriages between Likens and those families in this era.

John Smith and Lawrence Smith also surveyed and recorded land in Warren County but they were a year later on July 5, 1799.  These two tract were adjoining tracts and the record says that the tract recorded for Lawrence Smith was recorded as being in the large grove, between two and four miles "southwestwardly" of  Dripping Springs.   On modern maps, Dripping Springs is located in Edmonson County but less than a mile from the Warren County line and the description clearly locates John and Lawrence Smith at the site of Smith Grove.  This is about 14 miles from the Rays Branch site occupied by Jacob Smith Sr., Jacob Smith Jr., Mark Likens, and William Likens.  It should be recognized that the date of survey and recording is not the date that the families arrived at the site.  Land records were sort of informal and some families lived at a site for ten or more years before they bothered to make a legal record. All of these land records include the phrase "to include their improvements".  "Improvements could mean anything from a brush shelter to a substantial house that might require a year to construct.  It was a common practice for a party of men leave their families in Virginia while they located a new homestead on the frontier and then return to migrate with the larger part of the group.  This is the method practiced by Daniel Boone and many others.  William and Mark had probably been to the Barren and Green Rivers before Kentucky was made a state in 1792.

The Ohio County census for 1850 lists Likens family in the Indian Camp Creek area where Grayson, Butler, and Ohio Counties join.  Among these families is Nathan Likins, known son of Mark and Jane (Keown) Likens.  Mark died in 1837 in Ohio County and in 1850, Jane Likins was living in the home of her son Nathan.  The census of 1850 and 1860 show that Nathan and some siblings were born in Indiana while others were born in KY.  The 1820 census for IN was examined and the Mark Likens household was listed in Crawford County IN.  Keown families were also listed in that county.  The War of 1812 ended with the Treaty of Ghent and the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 and by 1820 many Kentucky families moved into the river counties, such as Crawford, of southern Indiana.  Mark Likens and his Keown in-laws were among them.

The Indiana Census of 1820 list the Mark Likens household with one male over 45.  This says that he was born before 1775 and other records say 1761.

The Indiana Census of 1820 lists one female between 26 and 45 in the household of Mark Likens.  This would be Jane (Keown) Likens who was about 38 in 1820.

The Indiana Census of 1820 lists 2 males under 10 in the Mark Likens household.  This would be Thomas who was born in KY in 1812 and Mark who was born Jan. 7, 1817 in KY.  The 1850 census confirms that they were born in KY and were of this age range.

The Indiana  Census of 1820 lists 3 females under 10 in the Mark Likens household.  One of these would be Elizabeth who was born in 1816 in KY.  This is not Mark's daughter Elizabeth who married Reuben Turner in 1814 and was born in VA but, a second daughter named Elizabeth with his third wife Jane Keown that he married in Warren County on 4 Aug. 1809.  This Elizabeth was probably named after Jane's mother, Elizabeth Young Keown.  This Elizabeth Likins was the unmarried sister of Nathan Likins who helped Nathan raise his family after the death of Nathan's wife about 1855.  The 1860 Ohio County Kentucky reports 34-year-old Elizabeth Likens  in the household of Nathan Likins.  According to Pearl (Colburn) Jones, her grandfather told her of his unmarried aunt who helped raise him after his mother died.  The second female under 10 in Mark's 1820 household was Sarah who was born in 1817.  Her brother, Mark, was born on Jan. 7, 1817 and maybe they were twins.  Since Jane had a twin brother it would not be totally unexpected that she would produce twins.   The third female under 10 in Mark's 1820 household was Hannah who married Matthew Covington Young on Dec. 15, 1830 in Daviess County KY.  According to the Lark Keown papers, Hannah was the oldest of Nathan's sister hence was born about 1810.  This Hannah should not be confused with her Aunt Hannah who was a sister to Mark

The Indiana Census of 1820 lists 2 females between the ages of 10 and 15 in the Mark Likens household.  These girls would have been born between 1805 and 1810 hence were the children of Mark and his second wife, Nancy (Smith) Likens.  This suggests that Nancy died shortly before Mark married Jane Keown.   The names of these daughters of Mark and Nancy (Smith) Likens are unknown and maybe there were other children.

Mark and Jane Likens had three other children.  Nathan was born in IN on 17 Feb 1822, John was born in 1825 in IN and Mary Jane was born in Warren County KY about 1827.  These children would not be in the 1820 census.  In the 1850 census for Ohio County KY Mary Jane and her mother, Jane (Keown) Likins,  were living in the home of Nathan Likins.  From these dates and birth states, it is easy to trace the migration of Mark and Jane.  After the War of 1812, they joined the migration to Indiana between the births of Mark in 1817 and Nathan in 1822.  They lived there until the birth of John in 1825 but returned to Warren County KY before the birth of Mary Jane about 1827.  Mark died in 1837 in Ohio County KY and in 1850 Jane and Mary Jane were living in the Indian Camp Creek area with Nathan Likins.  Many of the Keown and Young families were also there.  On Sep. 9, 1853, in Ohio County KY, Mary Jane Likens married her first cousin, Thomas J. Keown.   Thomas J. Keown was the son of Samuel Keown and Samuel was a brother to the mother of Mary Jane.  To complicate matters, Another son of Samuel Keown (James Wesley Keown) married Sarah Elizabeth Worley who was the daughter of William Worley and Rosanna (Likens) Worley thus Sarah was the grand daughter of  William Likens, father of Mark.  A daughter of this James Wesley and Sarah Worley Keown (Frances) married  John H. Likins, a son of Nathan and Jane.

Notes for NANCY SMITH:
1. - Montgomery County VA records give a marriage for Nancy Smith, daughter of Jacob Smith on Dec. 4, 1796 to Mark Likins.

Child of MARK LYKINS and MARY SMITH is:
6. i. ELIZABETH3 LYKINS, b. 1794, Virginia; d. Aft. 1870.

Children of MARK LYKINS and NANCY SMITH are:
 ii. GIRL3 LIKINS.

Notes for GIRL LIKINS:
1. - Established by 1820 census records for Crawford County IN.  In the house
of Mark Likens were two girls between 10 and 15 hence were born between, 1805 and 1810.  Mark married  Jane Keown in August of 1809.  Hence only one of these two girls was the child of Mark and Jane.  The other was the daughter of Mark and Nancy who died before 1809. Since the Lark Keown papers state that Hannah was Nathan's oldest sister, not half sister, it is believed that Hannah was the oldest child of Mark and Jane and this unidentified 10 to 15 year old girl was the daughter of Nancy and Mark, born between 1805 and 1809.

 iii. GIRL LIKINS.

Notes for GIRL LIKINS:
1. - Established by 1820 census records for Crawford County IN.

Children of MARK LYKINS and JANE KEOWN are:
7. iv. MARY J.3 LIKENS, b. 1827, Warren County, Ky.
8. v. HANNAH LIKINS, b. Abt. 1810, KY.
 vi. THOMAS LIKENS, b. February 23, 1812, KY; d. September 23, 1889; m. (1) SARAH F. JENKINS; m. (2) DORTHEA "DOLLY" FORD, December 10, 1838, Ohio, KY; b. 1819, KY; d. Bef. 1860.

Notes for THOMAS LIKENS:
1. - The age of Thomas Likens was established by the Ohio County KY census records  of 1850 as 38 years (1812) and being born in KY.  At that time, He and brothers John, and Nathan were listed next to each other in the Cromwell precinct.  In this census the name was spelled Likens instead of Likins.
2. - Davis County Marriage Records (Mastin, Filson Club) give the marriage of 48  year old Thomas Likens to Sarah F. Jenkins who was 31. The marriage date was Sep. 25, 1860 It   gives his father's birth place as VA and his mother's as SC.  It is reported as his second marriage.
3. - Ohio  County Records, Vol. I give the marriage of Thomas Likens to Dolly Ford on 10 Dec. 1838.  The entry "Ancil Hall", which follows the date, is presumed to be the minister or clerk who married them.  The marriage bond was by John Ford who could be her father.  The 1850 census record gives his wife as Dorthea.
4. - Exact birth and death dates are from cemetery records of Daviess County KY.  Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery located on KY 1389 between the towns of Spice Knob and Scythia.

 vii. ELIZABETH LIKINS, b. 1816; d. Aft. 1870.

Notes for ELIZABETH LIKINS:
1. - A great grand daughter of Nathan Likins (RIN #514), Pearl Colburn Jones was told by her grandfather (John H. Likins) that his mother died when he was a child and his father's older sister Elizabeth came to look after the children.  Elizabeth never married and suffered from an infliction known as a "hair lip".  Her age was established from the 1860 and 1870 census records of Ohio County when she was listed in the household of Nathan Likins.  She was not listed in Nathan's household in 1880 and it is presumed that she died between 1870 and 1880.  However, a careful search of the family cemetery, on the site of Nathan's home, revealed no monument to her so it may be that she didn't die
while living there or that she was buried in one of the several unmarked graves in that cemetery.
2. - In the census records of 1860 and 1870 Elizabeth was recorded as ELIZABETH LIKINS.

 viii. SARAH LIKINS, b. 1817, IN; m. BENJAMIN F. AUTRY, February 02, 1836, Ohio, KY; b. 1813, Kentucky; d. Aft. 1880.

Notes for SARAH LIKINS:
1. - The information on Sarah Likins and her spouse, Benjamin F. Autry, was obtained from Pierre Campbell (inter net contact), descendant of Thomas Likins, son of Mark.  He established that her father's name was Mark, that she was born in IN in 1817, and that she married in Ohio County KY on Feb 2, 1836.  Her father Mark made the security bond.
2. - Sarah and her brother Mark were both born in 1817, Mark in KY on Jan. 17 and Sarah in IN probably December of 1817.  It seems that they were not twins.

3.  The birth dates of Sarah and Mark show that Mark and Jane took their family from Warren County KY to Crawford County IN between Jan. and Dec. of 1817.  This fits the migration into IN after the Treaty Of Ghent in 1815.

4. - In the Crawford County IN census of 1820, there were two girls under ten listed for the Mark Likens household.  Sarah was one of the two and her sister Hannah (born about 1810) was the other.

5. - It is noted that Nathan Likins, younger brother to Sarah named his first child Sarah and that Nathan was a close friend to Hannah's husband and was the executor of the estate of Rosanna Baize (daughter of Hannah and Covington Young).  Rosanna Baize, Covington Young, and his second wife (Polly Young Keown, daughter of Nathan Lusk and Nancy Ann Likens Keown) are all buried near Nathan in the Likins cemetery near Neafus.

Notes for BENJAMIN F. AUTRY:
1. - See notes on spouse, Sarah Likins

 ix. MARK LIKINS, b. January 07, 1817, Kentucky; d. July 21, 1892, Ohio, KY; m. LUCINDA AUTREY, January 17, 1864, Ohio, KY; b. 1833.

Notes for MARK LIKINS:
1. - Mark's third marriage gives his father's birthplace as VA.  This is the additional justification for establishing the birthplace of Mark Likins (son of William).
2. - The marker in the Likins cemetery near Neafus KY uses the Likens spelling.
3. - Note that Mark's wife Lucinda Autrey was born in 1838 and he was born in   1817.  He was 21 years older than she.  The marriage records give that this was his third marriage and her first.
4. - "Davis County Marriage Records" (Filson Club) give a marriage between Mark Likens and Sarah Doty on March 28, 1846.  No record of another marriage has been found.  Since William Henry Likins stated in 1991 that Camden (a son of this Mark Likens) had a sister named Sarah, one must wonder if this could the daughter of Sarah and Mark instead of Mark  and Lucinda as is given by these records.

 x. NATHAN LIKINS, b. February 17, 1822, Crawford, IN; d. April 12, 1891, Caneyville, Grayson, KY; m. EVALINE MINERVA YOUNG.
 xi. JOHN LIKENS, b. 1825; m. ELIZABETH "BETSY J.".

Notes for JOHN LIKENS:
1. - The 1850 Ohio County KY census lists John along with his brothers Nathan and Thomas living in Cromwell Precinct.  He was born in KY and was 25 years old.  This indicates that his parents had returned to KY (probably Ohio County) by 1825.
2. - In the John and Elizabeth Likens household in 1850, there was an Elizabeth Elms who was 64 and born in VA.  It is possible that Elizabeth Elms is the mother of John's spouse and also the mother of Thomas M. Elms in the following note.
3.- There is a record of the marriage of Elizabeth Keown, daughter of Nathan, to Thomas M. Elms on 26 Sep 1833 in Ohio County KY.  This is probably the daughter of Nathan Lusk and Nancy (Likens) Keown.

Notes for ELIZABETH "BETSY J.":
1. - The 1850 census for Ohio County KY lists Elizabeth Elms, 64 years old female born in VA as part of the John and Elizabeth Likens household.  This sugests that Elizabeth's maiden name was Elms and this was her mother but there is no claim that this is fact.

3.  JAMES M.2 LIKENS (WILLIAM1) was born 1779 in VA.  He married JANE A. YOUNG February 19, 1808 in Warren, KY, daughter of MATTHEW YOUNG and MARY UNKNOWN.  She was born Bef. 1790.

Notes for JAMES M. LIKENS:
1. - Warren County Marriages (Louisville Public Library) list the marriage of James Lykins to Jane A. Young in Warren County on 19 Feb 1808.
2. - Warren County census of 1850 lists James Likens , 71 year old male, in house of James Cole and Martha Likens Cole.  It also confirms that he was born in VA.
3. - The 1850 census notes the return of the Likens spelling as opposed to the Lykins spelling used earlier.
4. - LDS data list the marriage of James M. Lykin to Jane A. Young on Jan. 8, 1808 in Warren County KY.  They also list the marriage of James M. Likens to Jane A. Young on Feb.19, 1808 in the same county.  This is probably bond date and ceremony date for the same couple.  The middle initial M is also from LDS data.
5. - The 1818 will of Matthew Young mentions his daughter Jane Likens and describes his residence as Indian Creek in Warren County KY.  The land of William

Correction. From: Bettyjean
Sent: Friday, June 29, 2007
Likens (father of James) was across a ridge on the headwaters of the north fork of Ray's Branch. The children of Martha Likens and James Cole did not include my grandfather who was on the 1850 census as Mathias Cole, instead you have Richard and I don't believe he had a brother named Richard. I would like to have that corrected. James died in 1856. Grandpa Cole was born in 1846 and he told my mother that his father died when he was young.  I know this is the right family. Would you please check the census for 1850 of warren co, ky so you can see that I am right. I would love to know more about her as she was my great grandmother. What she did and how she survived with a family  and no husband. My mother was Maude Irene Cole.   Please take the time to make the correction.  Sincerely,  A very distant relative.

2. - The 1850 census of Butler County KY list Rosanna Whorley in the household of James and Sarah Elizabeth Keown.  She was listed as 57 F born VA. Sarah Elizbeth was the daughter of William Worley and Rosanna Likens and was the mother of Frances Ann Keown who married John Henry Likins. John Henry Likins and Frances Ann Keown were both geat grand children of William Likins and unknown spouse and  were also great grand children of Thomas Keown and Betsy Young.  They were second cousins twice.    In addition, they were related  through the complex intermarriage of the Keown, Young, and Likins families.  Moreover, they were neighbors across several generations.

Notes for WILLIAM WORLEY:
1. - See biographical sketch for HARVEY WORLEY in Peter's "History of Fayettee County KY" pages 884-885.  This sketch identifies William Worley, a farmer in the southern part of the state, as the brother of Joshua Worley who was the son of William Worley .  In this way, William is identified as a grand son of Caleb and Rebecca Allen Worley of Botetourt County VA.  Montgomery County VA was created from Botetourt about 1790.

- Warren County KY marriage records give that Elizabeth Lykins, daughter of Mark Lykins, married Reuben Turner on 31 Jan. 1814.  The spelling of Likins as Lykins was quite common in that period of time.  This Elizabeth Likens was the daughter of Mary Smith, daughter of John and Elizabeth Smith, who was married to Mark in VA in Nov. 1794.  Elizabeth (Likens) Turner should not be confused with another Elizabeth Likens who was the daughter of Mark and Jane (Keown) Likins.  This second Elizabeth never married and came to live with Nathan Likins when his wife died about 1855.   The fact that Mary Smith was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Smith is established from the will of Elizabeth Smith where she names "Polly" Likens as her daughter.  The father of Mary can be established from published facts about another Smith daughter that married a Whalin and is included in Perrin's biographical sketeches of Warren County KY.

7.  MARY J.3 LIKENS (MARK2 LYKINS, WILLIAM1 LIKENS) was born 1827 in Warren County, Ky.  She married THOMAS J. KEOWN September 09, 1853 in Ohio County, KY, son of SAMUEL KEOWN and POLLY HAINES.

Notes for MARY J. LIKENS:
1. - Jo Canary found the record of Mary J. Likens marrying Thomas J. Keown on Sep. 9, 1853.  The record is in Vol. C, page 35 in Ohio County.  Thomas J. Keown and Mary Jane Likens were first cousins.

2.  The 1850 household of Nathan Likins included Nathan Likins (28 Male), Evaline Likins (26 female), Sarah (4 female), and John (1/12/male).  Also listed was  Mary Likens (23 female born in Warren County KY) and Jane Likins (69 female born in SC).  This Mary was Mary Jane Likens sister to Nathan and this Jane Likens was Jane Keown, mother of Nathan.

3. - In 1860 Ohio County KY census, Thomas J. and Mary J. Keown were living in the Cromwell district with the rest of the clan.  They had two children in the house, Nathan S. and Rosanna.  Rosanna was the daughter of Thomas and his first wife, Hannah Likens, sister to Nathan Likins and daughter of Jane
Keown and Mark Likins.

Children of MARY LIKENS and THOMAS KEOWN are:
 i. NATHAN S.4 KEOWN, b. 1850.
 ii. ROSANNA KEOWN, b. 1858.

8.  HANNAH3 LIKINS (MARK2 LYKINS, WILLIAM1 LIKENS) was born Abt. 1810 in KY.  She married MATTHEW COVINGTON YOUNG, son of NATHAN YOUNG and MARGARET UNKNOWN.  He was born December 15, 1830.

Notes for HANNAH LIKINS:
1. - The Lark Keown papers state that Hannah Likins who married Mathew Covington Young was Nathan Likins's older sister.  Lark Keown also stated that after her death, Mathew Covington Young married Polly Young Keown who was
daughter of Nancy Likens Keown and Nathan Lusk Keown.
2. - It is known that Hannah and Matthew Covington Young were married in Dec 1830 and Matthew married Polly Young and had a child by 1832.  It is presumed that Hannah died about 183.
3. - It is believed that Hannah was born after May 1810 and was less than 10 years old when the Crawford County IN census was taken in 1820.  Thus Hannah is the second girl under 10 in the Mark Likins house in 1820.  She would have been about 20 when she married Matthew Covington Young in Dec. of 1830.

Notes for MATTHEW COVINGTON YOUNG:
1. - Matthew Covington Young first married Hannah Likins, older sister to Mark Likins, then married Mary (Polly) Young Keown, who was the daughter of Nathan Lusk Keown and Nancy Ann Likins, sister to Mark Likins.  This is all from the Lark Keown papers.
2. - Matthew Young marker in Likins family cemetery located on what was the Nathan Likins farm lists his birth and death dates.  The next marker is listed as Mary Young,. wife of MC, with 7 Oct 1810 and 17 Aug. 1878.

Children of HANNAH LIKINS and MATTHEW YOUNG are:
 i. MARGARETE4 YOUNG, m. THAFFEL ALLEN.
 ii. ROSANNA LEWIS YOUNG.

9.  MARY ANN3 LIKENS (JAMES M.2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1809 in Warren, KY.  She married JOSEPH TURNER November 20, 1826 in Warren County, KY.

Notes for MARY ANN LIKENS:
1. - In this period, Warren County records tend to spell Likens as Lykins

Child of MARY LIKENS and JOSEPH TURNER is:
 i. PHEBE4 TURNER, b. Abt. 1831; m. JOSEPH COLE, September 01, 1851; b. Bef. 1830.

Notes for PHEBE TURNER:
1. - Phebe's grandfather, James Lykins, signed security as she was under 21 when she married Joseph Cole on 1 Sep. 1851.  Thus she was born about 1831

10.  MARTHA ANN3 LIKENS (JAMES M.2, WILLIAM1) was born July 24, 1813 in Warren, KY, and died February 29, 1908.  She married JAMES ALTON COLE May 12, 1837 in Bowling Green, Warren County KY, son of E. COLE and MARY UNKNOWN.  He was born 1811 in VA, and died August 26, 1856 in Riverside, Warren, KY.

Notes for MARTHA ANN LIKENS:
1. - Martha Ann's Likens's marriage record in Warren County Ky. was by her fathers bond  which fixes her age as under 21 in 1837.  She married James Cole on June 5, 1837 in Warren County.
2. - Birth and death dates and burial place from LDS (AFN:2LLV-LT), 18 Jun1991.  See spouse notes for other information.

Notes for JAMES ALTON COLE:
1. - A James H. Cole is mentioned as the son-in-law of Robert Moore in his will of 1808 in Warren County Ky.
2. - This James Cole family is established in the 1850 census of Warren County Ky.
3. - The 1850 census also lists James Likens (71 year old male born in Va. living in this household).  This confirms Martha's father and the return to the Likens spelling.
4. - James Alton Cole is listed in LSD files (AFN;2LLV-KN).  Middle name, death date and burial place from that source.  Also his father's name E. Cole and mother's first name Mary.  Originally I had birth year as 1810 (probably from census) but corrected to 1811 from LSD data.  LSD data also lists marriage date and Bowling Green as place.  LSD data gives marriage date as 5 June 1837 while Warren County Records show 12 May 1837.  The difference is probably bond date and ceremony date.

Children of MARTHA LIKENS and JAMES COLE are:
 i. BLUFFORD BARRON4 COLE, b. May 23, 1838, Warren County, KY; d. April 20, 1930; m. NANCY E. NORRIS.

Notes for BLUFFORD BARRON COLE:
Notes for BLUFFORD MAYBE BARRON COLE:
1. - in LSD records, first child of James and Martha Ann was named Barron, hence the maybe Barron in record.  Barron Cole (AFN:2LLX-JR) was buried at Riverside in Warren County KY.

ii. COSTER OR CASTER COLE, b. February 24, 1840, Bowling Green, Warren, KY; d. January 22, 1900; m. SALLIE BRISTER.

Notes for COSTER OR CASTER COLE:
In LSD records Caster Cole is AFN:2LLX-KX.  Full dates obtained from that
source.  Also spelling of Caster varies from Coster of other records.  LSD
lists him as twin to Mordacai.

11.  WILLIAM3 LIKENS (JAMES M.2, WILLIAM1) was born 1824 in Warren, KY..  He married (1) ELIZABETH WADDLE February 17, 1843 in Warren, KY.  She was born Abt. 1823 in Warren, KY, and died Bef. 1848 in Warren County, Ky.  He married (2) MARGARET BRANNUM May 22, 1848.  She was born 1818 in ILL.

Notes for WILLIAM LIKENS:
1. - William's marriage to Elizabeth Waddle on 17 Feb 1843 was with the consent of father, James Lykins, as he was not 21.  Thus William was born after 1822 and before 1827.  He later married Margaret Brannum on 22 May 1848.
2. - Warren County census of 1850 establishes William's age as 26 hence he was born in 1824.  This census lists his wife as Margarete who was 32 year old in 1850.  Presume Elizabeth died before 1848.

Child of WILLIAM LIKENS and ELIZABETH WADDLE is:
 i. EDWARD4 LIKENS, b. 1846.

Notes for JOHN E COCKRIEL:
1840 John is shown in the census as age 37 and born in VA. His occupation is shown as merchant. His real eastate was valued at $180. Jillson's Kentucy Land Grants page 1149 shows that he had 40 acres surved January 10, 1840 on Caney Creek. Another grant listed in Jillson's is discussed under John and wife Sarah. It was located on Sun Fish Creek. John's occupation of merchant may have caused him to relocate from time to time.

The 1850 census shows him with $180 in real estate and lists his occupation as a merchant. Tax records show that John was in Grayson Co., KY starting in 1834 through 1857. He seems to have been in Warren Co., KY where daughtyer Elizabeth ws born. Son Thomas was also shown as being born in Warren Co., KY ca 1840 or 1841, but his father paid taxes in Grayson Co., KY both of those years. The new property on Sun Fish Creek could indicate that he might have bought a new home for his new bride, which would place their marriage closer to 1845?. The birth record of Thomas and Presley William might indicate that John had removed to Warren Co., briefly, but was still paying taxes in Grayson Co., KY.
