His name may be John E. Cockriel - on the death record of Valentine Cockerel #176591 of KY it indicates that his father's name was John E. Cockerel. This is the only record that I have that indicates a middle name or initial. The informant for the death certificate was Preseley Cockerel of Millwood, KY.
1813 John Cockriel is born in 1813 in Wyth Co., VA. John died after 1880 censu - prob in Grayson Co., KY.
1833 Nancy J. Cockriel is born to John and _____? we think in 1833 in Grayson Co., KY. Nancy married John W. Hack on April 2, 1852. John W. Hack's parents were Andrew J. Hack and Rachel Smith.
1835 James Cockriel is born to John and _____? we think in 1835 in Warren or Grayson Co., KY. James died Feb 5, 1863.
1837 Elizabeth Cockriel is born to John and _____? we think in 1837 in Warren Co., KY. Elizabeth married John Preston on Oct 20, 1855 in Grayson Co., KY. John was born 1813? in KY.
1839 Eliza J. Cockriel is born to John and _____? we think in 1839 in Grayson Co., KY. Eliza married Walter Nash January 17, 1855 in Grayson Co., KY. Walter was born 1837? in KY.
1840 John is shown in the census as age 37 and born in VA. His occupation is shown as merchant. His real eastate was valued at $180. Jillson's Kentucy Land Grants page 1149 shows that he had 40 acres surved January 10, 1840 on Caney Creek. Another grant listed in Jillson's is discussed under John and wife Sarah. It was located on Sun Fish Creek. John's occupation of merchant may have caused him to relocate from time to time.
1843-47 Married Sarah Hayse between 1843-47 - prob Grayson Co., KY. Sarah was born ca 1829 in Grayson Co., KY according to the 1850 census which gave her age as 21. She was named the daughter of John/"Jack" and Tabitha/"Tabby" (______) Hayse in her death record found in the Grayson Co. KY 1852-1861 Vital Records. She died July 17, 1853 of dropsy at age 23. Her parents are found in the 1850 census as family #620 with John shown as age 51 and Tabitha shown as age 52. Also shown are her youngest brothers and sisters: Jane age 18, Winny age 17, Willis age 15 and Lewis age 13.
1843-50 John next married Sarah Sirles between 1843-50. Sarah was the daughter of Joseph and Martha/Patsy Roberts.
1847 Jillson's Kentucky Land Grants on page 1194 shows that he had 40 acres surveyed on June 23, 1847 on Sun Fish Creek.
1847 Presley William Cockriel was born to John and ____? in Warren Co., KY. Presley married Sarah M. Hayse.
1848 Andrew Jackson Cockriel was born to John and ____? in Grayson Co., KY. Andrew married Eliza E. Durbin on January 19, 1867 in Edmonson Co., KY - book 4 page 243.
1850 The 1850 census shows him with $180 in real estate and lists his occupation as a merchant. Tax records show that John was in Grayson Co., KY starting in 1834 through 1857. He seems to have been in Warren Co., KY where daughtyer Elizabeth ws born. Son Thomas was also shown as being born in Warren Co., KY ca 1840 or 1841, but his father paid taxes in Grayson Co., KY both of those years. The new property on Sun Fish Creek could indicate that he might have bought a new home for his new bride, which would place their marriage closer to 1845?. The birth record of Thomas and Presley William might indicate that John had removed to Warren Co., briefly, but was still paying taxes in Grayson Co., KY.

1852 William Cockriel was born to John and Sarah Hayse Cockriel on January 29, 1852 in Grayson Co., KY. William died February 20, 1852 in Grayson Co., KY. Cause of death given as "flux" - age 3 weeks.
1853 John married Annie or Anner Allen on December 2, 1853. She was age 33 and single when they married. Annie was shown as age 29 in the 1850 census family #1026 of parents John and Nancy (__) Allen.
1854 John Amos Cockriel was born to John and Annie (Allen) Cockriel on December 21, 1854 in Grayson Co., KY (vital record). John Amos married Arvena J. Montgomery on May 8, 1879 in Grayson Co., KY. John Amos died June 20, 1884 Shrewsbury, Grayson Co., KY.
1856 Nancy Cockriel born to John and _____? about 1856-7. Nancy first married John E. Clark on September 26, 1875. Her second marriage to ______ Johnson. There is a question as to the identity of this Nancy. She is possibly the daughter of John and third wife Annie Allen, but John Cockerel and Sarah ___? had a daughter named Nance born ca 1833, who is shown on the 1850 Census. It is not likely that John would name another daughter Nancy, but it is not impossible. He seems to have named three of his children William. Sometimes a second child was named after an older child who had died, which seems to be the case with the two Sarahs by his fourth wife Roda, but this may not be the case here. Sometimes all sons were named after a common ancestor and called by their second name. There is no birth record found for this Nancy Cockriel in the 1852-1861 Vital Redors of Grayson Co., KY on microfilm. The marriage record above would indicate that her father was not John, since he was born in VA; but these records are not always accurate. There is an 1870 census record in Grayson Co., KY on page 352 thaken on July 1st that shows Railroad Laborer Jno (John) Clark age 23 born in Ohio with wife Anna age 24 born in KY.The census record indicates that they were married in December of 1869. This is probably the same John Clark who married Nancy in 1875. There is also a possibility that Nancy is the daughter of Rohoda Turner and her first husband Henry Gray of Warren Co., KY who had a daughter born July 30, 1855 in Grayson Co., KY named Almetta J. Gray. Nancy may have been born in late 1856 or shorthly before Rhoda married John on August 11, 1857.
1857 John's fourth wife was Rhoda (Turner) Gary. They were married on August 11, 1857 in Warren Co., KY - book D page 405. Rhoda was the wido of Henry Gary. Her parents were Reuben and Elizabeth (____) Turner. Her death certificate #168574 shows she died a widow on March 24, 1916 in Shrewsbury, Grayson Co., KY - age about "90" years, of "Senility". The informant for the record was her son Vol Cockerel of Shrewsbury.
1858 Filen/Fheling/Turddor Cockerel was born to John and Rhoda on December 21, 1858 in Warren Co., KY.
1859 Sarah F. Cockerel was born to John and Rhoda on December 26, 1859. Possibly died young.
1862 William Thomas Cockerel was born to John and Rhoda on July 1862 in Butler Co., KY. William was probably married twice and his second wife may have been Ella Hunt.
1862 Reuben Buel Cockerel was born to John and Rhoda on July 1862 in Butler Co., KY. Reuben married Lou/Lula/Lucy Skaggs on April 13, 1891 in Butler Co., KY.
1865 Lucinda Paradine Cockerel was born to John and Rhoda about 1865 in Edmonson Co., KY. We think that Lucinda married twice and her second husband was Andrew M. Phelps on November 7, 1896.
1867 Sarah J. Cockerel was born to John and Rhoda on September 12, 1867 in Edmonson Co., KY. Sarah married James W. Hack. Sarah died August 14, 1900 and is buried in House Cemetery in Sadler, Grayson Co., KY.
1868 James Valentine/Volentine "Vol" Cockriel was born to John and Rhoda on November 28, 1868 in Warren Co., KY. Vol married Mary/Polly Allen in 1889. Vol died November 24, 1921 in Ready, Grayson Co., KY.
1870 John is shown in both Edmonson Co. and Grayson Co. in the 1870 census. He was living in Bee Springs District Precinct 2, Edmonson Co. on June 15th and by July 19th he was living in the Leitchfield Precinct of Grayson Co. as shown on page #363 family #761. The 1870 census records for Edmonson Co., KY for the Bee Springs District Precinct #2, June 15, 1870 has the following: John Cockril age 55, Roda age 40, Jackson age 21, Henry age 19, Eliza E. age 18, John A. age 15, Nancy 13, Filen age 11, Willian T. age 7, Ruben B. age 7, Lucinda P. age 5, Sarah J. age 3, Volentine age 1.
1871 Sheba J. Cockriel was born to John and Rhoda about 1871 in Grayson Co., KY.
1873 Martin Cockriel was born to John and Rhoda on July 1, 1873 in Shrewsbury, Grayson Co., KY. Martin married Alice E. Allen about 1895 - probably in Grayson Co. KY. Martin died January 21, 1936 and is buried in Shrewsbury Cemetery, Grayson Co., KY. Certificate of Death has that he died of a gunshot wound to his chest and was suicide - at his home. It also has that he was a retired farmer and residence as Leitchfield, KY. Informant was Mrs. Israel Cockerel.
1878 In 1878 John's name appears on a dead of conveyance dated May 21, 1878 between John Cockrell, Sr. and Rody Cockrell, his wife, of Grayson County, KY parties of the first part, and John A. Cockrell, Jr. of Edmonson Co., KY party of the second part. A sum of $400 exchanged hands. This information is found on page 338 of Book L in Edmonson Co., KY. The conveyance continued on page 339 John Riley Cockerel, Jr. did not have. John Riley's indicates that the next page would show that they sold their land to son John Amos.
1880 John also appears on the 1880 census for Grayson Co in the Sand
Spring District as family #50. He is shown as age 66, born in VA and with
both of his parents born in VA. Rhoda is shown as age 54, born in KY with
both of her parents born in KY. The children at home are Fheling age 21,
Ruben B. age 17, Lucinda age 15, Sarah age 13, Valentine "Vol" age 11,
Sheba J. age 9, and Marten age 7.
Father: unknown, May be Presley (see entry for 1839 that is the only documentation that I have to connect Presley and Margaret)
Mother: unknown,
May be Margaret Cockrell shown on Federal Census of 1830 for Warren CO KY, page 100. James (?) is shown on same census page 101. The age span on the census for James is 15 and under 20, which could be correct. A female is shown with him for the same age span. I assume this is Lucinda Sirles (ID=11), his first wife. As he was born in 1812, he would be about 18 in 1830.
James was born: July 25, 1812, in Virginia, however Kentucky was at one time VA.
Died: August 5, 1859, 47 years old. James is buried in the Cockriel Cemetery, Platte County Missouri. Cause of death, from oral history, was a high fever. He died on the Cockriel farm in Preston Township of Platte County Missouri and is buried in the Cockriel Cemetery of said farm. A grave stone still stands in the north east corner of the grave yard for James. I have a picture of this stone.
Married: to Lucinda Sirles Pre 1830.
Lucinda's Father was Joseph Sirles (B between 1775-1794 poss VA). Died
between 1841-1849 in Grayson Co KY. He may have been married twice. One
marriage wass to Martha/Patsey Roberts on March 21, 1812 in Logan CO KY.

A warranty deed filed in Grayson County KY involving Harriett Ashley daughter of Lucinda Cockriel deceased carries the date of 1881. Oral history would suggest that Lucinda Sirles died in 1855 or early 1856.
James second marriage was to Lucinda Stice or Srite, sometime before leaving KY in 1856. James' second wife was murdered in 1886 (see copy of newspaper article 1886).
What follows is the tale of James Cockriel by year where I have evidence or documentation.

1831 I can find no mention of James for this year. His son William (ID=27) was born May 15, 1831 in Grayson CO KY.
1831 Pages 898 and 899, from the History of Platte County Missouri. Capt. William Cockrill. (Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 1, Post-office, Ridgley) Begin Quote "On the 15th of May, 1831, in Grayson Co., KY, there was born to James and Lucinda (Sirls) Cockrill a son, whom we now take as the subject of this sketch - a man who has risen to a well merited prominence among the citizens of this county, and one respected by all for his sterling worth. James Cockriel was a Virginian by birth, but his wife was orginally from Kentucky. In 1856 the family removed to Missouri and located in Platte county, where Mr. C. bought land and improved a farm. He was occupied with agricultural pursuits only a short time after his removal to this vicinity, death putting an end to what was the promise of an unusualy successful career. He died in August, 1858. During his early years William Cockrill was denied the privileges of receiving much of an education outside of what could be obtained by self-application. But, of determined purpose and will for securing something of a knowledge of books, he applied himself closely, and, as proven in later years, to advantage. His occupation in his younger days was teaming and hauling from Louisville to Nashville for a number of years. In November, 1855, he was married in his native county to Mis Martha Jane Bratcher, an old schoolmate, and a daughter of John A. Bratche, originally from North Carolina. Mrs. C. was born, reared and educated in Kentucky. During the late war Capt. Cockrill served in the State militia, and, just previous to the close of the conflict, was commissioned captain. The Captain is the owner of 310 acres of fenced land, wupon which is a comparatively new residence, barns, etc. To his present position he has risen entirely by his own efforts, having from the very first nothing ro rely upon but his own energy and will. He is not personally occupied to any great extent in agricultural pursuits, his land being rented, while he lonas his money. Capt. and Mrs. Cockrill have no children of their own, but have an adopted nephew, William Cockrill, who mother is dead; he is five years old." End of Quote.
Family records indicate that William was the son of Anderson Cockriel and ____? and born in 1879.
1833 In the tax books for 1833, on page 6, I found James 'Cockril' listed. This is the same film mentioned above.
1834 On page 5 of the tax fook for 1834 I found James 'Cockrell' listed. Also appearing is John Cockrell. I strongly suspect that this could be a brother of James. On page 6 of the tax books for the 1834 rear the name Margaret Cockrell appears. In the 1850 census of KY (roll 202) entry 848, it shows a Sarah (ID=28), 16 years old, female, who probably was born to James and Lucinda about 1834.
1836 The only entry on the tax film in 1836 was Margaret 'Cockrell' and John Cockrell.
1836 Serilda "Surrilda" Cockriel is born to James Cockriel and Lucinda Sirles - her birth date is not fixed at this time. Serilda married Phillip W. Stice on ____?. Children of Phillip and Serlda were: James W.; Geroge; Sarah; Rebecca; Alice; Lucinda; and Martha E. (Stice's have a strong connection to Cockriel's) In 1860 Rebecca Stice is living next to Philip W. Stice and Serilda.
1837 50 acres of vacant land on Caney Creek was surveyed for James 'Cockrell'. Suravey was made by Allen Clagett, Surveyer of Grayson Co KY. Joseph Surles was a marker.
1838 Marshall Cockriel was born to James and Lucinda (Sirles) Cockriel in Grayson Co., KY. There is only one photo of Marshall and his wife Margaret that I am aware of and you can look at that phote by clicking here. Marshall married Margaret Fugett on October 7, 1859. Children of Marshall and Margaret are: 1) Missouri Ann "Zue" Cockriel, born September 15, 1863; 2) Willie Cockriel (died young 1864); 3) James Alan Cockriel, born February 6, 1866; 4) John Casper Cockriel, born November 6, 1868; 5) Margaret Jane Cockriel, born Jan 30, 1871; 6) Mary Evelyn Cockriel, born Oct 4, 1873; 7) Frances Cordelia Cockriel, born Oct 9, 1875; 8) Robert Marshall Cockriel, born Oct 15, 1877, 9) Minnie Lee Cockriel, born July 16, 1880. Another photo of Marshall Cockriel with many of his children taken around 1900 in here.
1838 On the tax books for 1838 can be found A. J. Cockrill, James Cockrill and John Cockrill. The books indicate that John owned 200 acres on Caney Creek. I believe that these 3 are brothers.
1839 The tax books for 1839 show James Cockrell owned 50 acres on Caney Creek water shed. On the same page it shows that John Cockrell owned 125 acres in the Caney Creek water shed. Also on the same page is A. J. Cockrell owning 100 acres. For the first time the name of Thomas Cockrell appears. Could these four be brothers? And was Margaret their mother?
1839 A survey record for 50 acres of land on Caney Creek next to land already owned by James Cockrael is recorded for
1839 Survey for James Cockral. Survey by Robert Goode Surveyor of Grayson Co KY. Alen Surls was a marker.

1840 The 1840 census for Grayson CO KY lists James Cockerillewith 6 children and wife. John Cokerile is listed with 4 children and wife. Andrew Cockerile is shown with 3 children and wife. The tax books for 1840 show a Andrew J. Cockriel. This is probably the A. J. that has appeared since 1838. John Cockrill appears also, and the record shows that he owned 125 acres in the Caney water shed. Thomas Cockrill is also listed. James Cockriel is listed owning 50 acres in the Caney creek water shed and as having one child under 16 years of age. This is probably William or Sarah.
1840 On page 1149 in the book: "The Kentucky Land Grants" by Willard Rouse Jillson, 1925, Filson Club Publication #33, it has a line entry for Jas ( I assume James) Cockrel under the section of the book headed "Grants in County Court Orders (1836-1924)". The entry has: 50 acres, book 7, page 379, surveyed on 9-1-1840 in Grayson County Caney Creek water course.
1841 The tax book for 1841, page 11, indicate that James Cockerel owned 142 acres in the Caney Creek water shed. The record also shows that he had 2 children 16 years of age. This surly must be in error as the 1850 census records of Grayson county, KY indicates by 1850 he had 10 children, 5 of whom would have been born by now. This could be explained if some children, like Sarah, lived with others at the time. Or of course another James. Thomas Cockriel is listed in 1841 as well as A.J. Cockriel who owned 100 acres in Caney water shed. John Cockrile is show as owning 160 acres in Caney Creek water shed and having 2 children under 16 tears of age.
1842 Martin Cockriel is born on May 25, 1842 to James Cockriel and Lucinda Sirles. Martin married Paradise Stice in 1860. Children of Martin and Paradise were: 1) Charley Boston "Boss" Cockriel; 2) Lewis W. Cockriel; 3) James Morgan Cockriel; 4) Ida Ella Cockriel; 5) Lucy Maude Cockriel; 6) Adeline F. Cockriel.
1842 On page 14 of the 1842 tax books 3 Cockriel's are listed: James Cockeril with 193 acres in Caney water shed, 2 children; Andrew J. Cockeril with 150 acres in Caney water shed and John Cockerill with 160 acres in the Caney Creek water shed and one child.
1842 Grayson County KY Marriage record. I do hereby certify that on the 6th day of February I have joined together in the honorable state of matrimony George A. Hack and Sarah Cockrill to marry given from under my hand this day and date above.

1843 On page 2 of the tax book James Cockeril is shown owning 200 acres in Caney water shed and as having 4 children. Andrew Cockeril appears as owning 100 acres in Caney water shed. On the same page the names John Cockril and Thomas Cockril appear.
1844 The tax book shows that James Cockerel owned 250 acres in Caney Water shed and had 5 children. Also listed is Jackson Cockerell with 200 acres in Caney water shed. Could this be A. J. and Andrew?? Also listed are John Cockerel and Thomas Cockerel.
1845 The tax books now indicate that James Cockerill owns 350 acres in Caney water shed with 5 children. Andrew J. Cockerile is listed as owning 100 acres in Caney water shed. Also listed is Thomas Cockerile and John Cockerile.
1849 On page 3 of the tax books for Grayson CO KY for 1849, (tax books 1846-1864), (film #138110 - Morman Genealogical Library #08002) indicate that James Cockerile owned 250 acres in Caney Creek water course and had 6 children under 16 years of age. One page 4 for the same year is a John Cockerile listed, shown owning 40 acres.
1849 30 acres of land on Caney Creek surveyed for James Cockrael. Survey by Robert Goode, Surveyor of Grayson CO KY. Allen Surles - chair carrier. Marshall Cockrael - marker (this must be James's son).
1849 On page 1149 in the book: "The Kentucky Land Grants" by Willard Rouse Jillson, 1925, Filson Club Publication #33, is has a line entry for Jas (I assume James) Cockriell under section of the book headed "Grants in county court orders (1836-1924)". The entry has: 30 acres, book 29, page 360, surveyed 3-9-1849, Grayson county, Caney Creek water course. This entry matches the photo copy of the survey I have for this date (see files).

1850 (roll 202) frame or page 848 James Cockriel is listed. The record shows that he is 37 years old and was born in Virginia. Substracting 37 years from 1850 would put has birth at 1813. Of course, the time of the census and James' birth date could be due to the age listed as 37. The record shows that Lucinda was 36 years old and was born in Kentucky. The record shows 9 children living with them. One assumes that all nine are the natural children of James and Lucinda. The children were listed as follows:
William 19 ie 1831
Sarah 16 ie 1834
Harriett 15 ie 1835
Surrilda 14 ie 1836
Marshall 12 ie 1838
Louisa 9 ie 1841
Martin 8 ie 1842
Morgan 3 ie 1847
Clarissa 7/12 ie 1850 or 1849
It would appear from the record that Martha Sirles, 54 years old, female was living with them. She was born in South Carolina. Perhaps her husband, Joseph, was deceased by this time. It would be very important to locate a cemetery record for Joseph and later Martha, because Lucinda might be buried there.
1850 On frame or page 1040, the census records indicate that Lavina Cockriel, a 7 year old female loved with Allen Sirles aged 29, a male. According to the records of Jacqueline Tevault, Allen Sirles was married to Elizageth Harris at this time. The mother and father of Livana Cockriel remain a mystery at this time (1-20-1985). (Nothing more as of 12-30-1996)
1850 Frame or page 522 of the 1850 census shows that Andrew J. Cockriel was 32 years old. Apparently his wife was Mary, aged 33. The record shows the following children:
Joseph 15 ie 1835
Margaret 13 ie 1837
Stephen 11 ie 1839
Lucinda 9 ie 1841
Martha 7 ie 1843
Rebecca 5 ie 1845
George W. 2 ie 1848
1850 On frame or page 570, line 10 an Ellen Cockriel, age 11 born in KY is shown as if living with George Hack???
1850 On frame or page 591, appears the name Frances Cockriel, aged 34, born in KY. The record indicates 2 children as follows:
Hamilton 3 ie 1847
Martha 3 ie 1847 Twins????
1850 On frame or page 647 the name Marshlla Cockeril, aged 6 born in KY appears. She apparently lived with StephenWilson.
1850 On frame or page 654 John Cockriel appears. The record shows that he is 37 years old and was born in VA. The following names apparently live with him:
Sarah 21 ie 1829
Nancy 17 ie 1833
James 14 ie 1836
Elizabeth 12 ie 1838
Elirza 11 ie 1839
Thornce 9 ie 1841
Presley 3 ie 1847
Jackson 2 ie 1848
Henry 3/12 ie 1849 or 1850
1850 James Sirles 78, male born in VA, apparently lived with John. The record shows that he had Parefsen (hard to read) disease. That is the spelling of the disease as best I can make it out. Could this be the grandfather of Lucinda?? ie., the father of Joseph?? This may be a clue that the Cockriels and Sirles left VA and came to KY at about the same time. Look for Sirles in VA around 1812 and it may lead to the location of the Cockriels at that same time period???

1850 The tax books for 1850 also shows that James Cockerile owns 180 acres in Sunfish water course. It also shows that Jackson Cockerile owned 150 acres in Caney water shed.
1851 The tax books show that James Cockerile owned 250 acres in Caney water course and had 4 children under 16 years old. The books also show that John Cockriel owned 180 acres in Sunfish water course and that A. Jackson Cockriel owned 150 acres in Caney water course.
1852 On page 5 of the tax books the record indicates that James Cockerel owned 280 acres in Caney water shed and had 5 children under 16. Andrew J. Cokerile is also shown on page 4 as owning 150 acres in Caney water course. John Cockere is listed on page 5 as owning 300+ 100 + 40 + 40 acres.
1852 Vital Statistics for Grayson Co KY box #11, roll 4250-40601. Starts with year 1852. Lists James A. Cockerel born July 27, 1852. Father is James Cockerill and mother is Lucinda Sirles. This conflicts with the 1854 date below.
1853 On page 6 of the tax books James Cockerel is listed as owning 280 acres in Caney water course and with 4 children under 16. On the same page William Cockerile is show as owning 450 acres in Sunfish water course and as having no children. This is probably James' oldest son. Also on the same page is the name John Cockerel shown owning 300 acres.
1854 Page 5 of the tax books show that James Cickerel owned 250 acres in Caneyu water course and had 4 children under 16. William Cockerile is listed on the same page shown as owning 400 acres in Sunfish water course. John Cockerile is also shown as owning 250 acres.
1854 I found a record that reported that James A. Cockriel was born December 21, 1854 in Grayson Co KY. I think the A is for Anderson. I have had great difficulty in locating evidence concerning Anderson or his descendents. Oral history would indicate that Anderson was a carpenter. He apparently built the house in Platte Co MO on the Cockriel farm near Ridgley. This was the farm owned by James Sr. Anderson apparently had a drinking problem and was not close to the rest of the Cockriel family. Oral histor would indicate that Anderson was buried in Kansas or in Kansas City MO. Anderson had a son named William that was raised by William Cockriel and Martha Jane Bratche.
1855 On page 5 of the tax books the name James Cockerile Sr. appears as owning 280 acres in Caney water course as as having 4 children. Why the Sr.?? On the same page the name James Cockerile Jr. appears. We know that James Anderson was born December 21, 1854, but the Jr. makes on think that James (1812) had the same middle name of Anderson???? Surly a son only 1 year old would not own anything to be taxed?? Also listed on the same page is John Cockerile shown owning 300 acres.
1856 On page 17 of the tax books the name James Cockerill Sr. is shown owning 280 acres in Caney water course and having 3 children under 16 years old. On the same page John Cockreill is shown as owning 200 acres in Caney water course. On page 18 William Cockerill is shown as owning 150 acres in Caney water course. Also on page 18 James Cockerill Jr. appears as owning 75 acres. The name of Mrs. Francis Cockerill appears on page 18 also and this is probably the same person as listed in the 1850 census.
1856 Oral hishory recorded by Gladys Mildred Cockriel Heath, would indicate James took his second wife Lucinda Stice or Srite in 1856 in KY.
1856 In the book, "History of Clay and Platte Counties", page 898 it is reported that James Cockriel moved to Platte Co MO in 1856 from KY.
1856 Oral history would indicate that in 1856, James with several other families (7?) left KY and came to MO looking for new farmland and a place to settle down. They used some oxen to pull the wagons on this journey. It is said that Marshall walked by a team the whole journey. The got to a mill located on the Platte river (Mattneys Mill??) near Edgeron, MO in Platte Co. Evidently they arrived late in the Fall or early Winter and the Winter was unusually hard and they spent the Winter camped near the mill. In the Spring most of the party (not sure how many) dediced the Winters in MO were to severe and they returned to KY or perhaps some to Indiana.
James and his famly stayed and located on a farm south of Edgeron about 5 miles and within 2 miles of Ridgley. This same oral historical account was reported to me by John Riley Cockerel Jr., on 2-9-1997 when John lived at 111 Penner Drive, Leitchfield, KY 42754. He says he hard the story from Lweller Cockerel Goodman, daughter of James C. Cockerell and Rosie Savar. I wrote to Lweller, using several address, but no response. At any rate, I got the story from 2 diffent lines of Cockrells.
1858 Vital Statistics for Grayson Co KY Box #11, Roll 4250-40601. Starts with year 1852. Lists birth for Nancy Jane Decker on May 25, 1858 in Platte co MO. Father is Valentine Decker and mother is Louisa Cockerill. This would make one think that Valentine Decker and his wife Louisa (daughter of James and Lucinda) came to MO with James.
1859 James Cockriel dies August 5, 1859. He is buried in the Cockriel Cemetery in the north east corner. His gravestone still stands as of 12-30-1996. I have a photo of the gravestone that was taken in the 1970's.
1860 Micro-film Mortality Census of Missouri for 1860 shows on page or frame 242 for Carrol twp, Platte County James Cockrell. Data as follows: age 48, born VA, cause of death - bilious feaver, was ill 11 days.
1881 Warranty deed of 1881 which mentions that ..."Harriett Ashley dedc. who was a daughter of Lucinda Cockrill decd. .." On May 24, 1979, I visited in the home of Lowell Heath and his wife Gladys Mildred Cockriel Heath near their Edgerton Missouri. She shared with me notes she had collected over the years of Cockriel family history. Her notes indicated that James Cockriel 's (1812) first wife died and that he married Lucinda Stice or Stite in 1856 in Kentucky. I had heard from several that James (1812) had married twice, but had not taken this seriously because if it were true it would mean that both wifes had the same first name. Finding this warranty deed finally gave me proof that his first wife died before 1881 and we know that his second wife was still alive at that time.
1886 The Weston Chronicle Friday Morning, July 2, 1886. Article titled "Murdered Near Ridgley". I quote:
On Saturday evening June 26, Mrs. Lucinda Cockrell a widow lady, aged about 75 years living near Ridgely, was found dead in a deep spring not far from her residence. It was at first supposed that she had accidentally fallen in the spring head first in which position she was found. An infestigation followed and it was soon learned that a negro named John Cotton, formerly of this city, had left the place very suddenly a short time before the the body had been found. Cotton worked on the same quarter section of land with Mrs. Cockrill for of relative of hers, and his leaving on the heels of the murder lead to an inquiry which resulted in him being charged with having committed the crime. It seems that the negro, who is a bright mullatto and very fine looking, had fallen in love with a grand-daughter of Mrs. Cockrell's and notwithstanding their difference in color, laid siege to the heart of the maiden. A letter, written to the girl by Cotton, fell into the hands of the grandmother and Cotton wanted very much to regain the latter and it is thought murdered Mrs. Cockrell to get possession of it. Cotton was traced to Leavenworth and arrested by sheriff Pack, who placed him in the county jail. He waved a preliminary examination on Monday last and was committed to jail without bail, and will await the action of the grand jury.
This Lucinda (d 1886) may have been Lucinda Cox, who married Jesse Stice on 10-2-43 in Edmonson Co., KY (Marriages - 1825 -1851, compiled by Annie W. Burns 'Bell', Seat Pleasant, Maryland, August, 1993). Later in Edmonson Co., KY Deed Books (around 1845) Andrew Stice and Nance his wife to Lucinda, widow, (word may be missing from my photo copy here) James L., Margaret H., Charles H., and Mary L. Stice, (word may be missing from my photo copy here) widow and heirs of Jesse, deceased for $75. the land on which he lived - 50 acres. (photo copy of this pate is cut off and is not complete, plus the exact date is not clear) Another entry #303, Lucinda Stice to Andrew Stice for $30 on February 20, 1854.
1975 I first became seriously intereted in genealogy at Christmas time December 1975. It was then I took my first notes from discussion with my mother Ellen Glen Baber Cockriel and her second husband Thomas Cockriel (son of James Alan Cockriel and Allie Walters). Between Tom and Mom, I was able to collect several facts and hand me down stories. On story that Tom related to me was about how James and his family settled in Missouri.
Tom's story - In about 1856, James with several other families (7 families as Tom remembered) left Kentucky and came to Missouri looking for new farmland and a place to settle down. The got to Matney's Mill located on the Platte River, near Edgerton, Missouri in Platte County. Evidently they arrived in late fall or early winter and the winter was unusually hard and they spent the winter camped near Matney's Mill. In the spring most of the party (not sure how many) decided that the winters in Missouri were to severe and they retured to Kentuky or at least headed back. Some may have stoped in Indiana, etc. James and his family stayed and located on a farm south of Edgerton about 5 miles and within one mile of Ridgley Missouri.
1976 In my pursuit of genealogy facts on James and Lucinda I came in contact with John Riley Cockerel,Jr 111 Penner Drive, Leithchfield, Kentudy 42754, in August of 1976. John Riley quickly became interested in finding out about his own family history and ammassed information at a fantistic rate. In 1985, John Riley hired VirJean Potter Bozarth, 4818 Spellman Road, Houston Texas, 77035 to put together a document titled, "The Cockerel/Cockriel Family of Grayson County KY". John Riley sent me a photo copy of that document and I have shared with several others who search the Cockriel history.
Oral history would have that the murdered lady Lucinda, 2nd wife of James, was a "mean" woman. She was dis-liked so much that her stepsons would not let her live with them, instead they made her live in a log cabin on William's farm, close to a spring. John Cotton was sent to take care of her. He was not a slave, but a free man. Oral history would have her found dead in the spring with her hands tied behind her back. She was not buried next to her husband James, who had died earlier in 1859, but was buried near the spring and the cabin where she lived.
1976 On Sunday March 7, 1976 I interviewed Mutle Murphy, some 90 years
old, about the stories she could recall concerning James and Lucinda. Mrs.
Murphy repeated stories about Lucinda's meanness. The rest of the Cockriels
and the neighbors had little to do with her. On that same afternoon I tried
to locate the spring and the cabin and where the grave might have been.
I know the general area (I grew up on the same Cockriel farm) but could
not determine the exact location.
1830 Census records for Warren Co., KY on page 100, shows that Margaret Cockrell as the head of the family. The father was probably dead by the 1830 census or perhaps divorced, etc. Eleanor is listed as between 15 and 20 years old, that would put her birth between 1810 - 1815.
1850 Stephen Wilson and wife Eleanor are found in the 1850 census of Grayson County Kentucky as family #647. Stephen is shown as age 39 and a farmer by occupation. Eleanor is shown as age 37.
