We have developed courses that include every passage in Matthew 5, 6 and 7. In this series we will look at the Sermon on the
Mount in Matthew. As you study these courses
try to answer the question, "When and how
does this apply to me?"
They are being reformatted and illustrated for publication. These are available now:

THE BEATITUDES The Seasons of Our Christian Life (9 lessons) Matthew 5:1-12
In this course, we will study the Beatitudes. I believe the Beatitudes were not something new, but
simply Jesus teaching the people to better understand the Scriptures they already had, the Scriptures we
call the Old Testament. I will also try to make the case that the Beatitudes are a description of
sanctification, of our development as a Christian over time.

AVOID THE EDGE - Avoid falling into sin by seeking righteousness instead (8 lessons) Matthew 5:13-48
In this course we are going to take a broad look at the rest of Matthew 5, verses 13 through 48. I want to
talk about a general idea I believe Jesus was trying to get across. He uses six examples in the same
form. "You have heard that the ancients were told ..." (then He quotes something from the Old
Testament and/or something the Pharisees claimed was right) and then He says, "But I say to you ..." and
then gives an example of this idea. The idea is this: stay away from the edge of the chasm of sin, it is dangerous there.

ANGER Avoid allowing your anger from becoming sin. (4 lessons) Matthew 5:21-26
In this course we are going to study carefully Jesus' teaching about avoiding murder by controlling our anger, by looking at other Bible passages and what they teach us about dealing with our anger. Anger is not sin, but if we are not careful it can become sin.

THE BIRDS & THE BEES - Avoid the traps of adultery and unjustified divorce. (4 lessons) Matthew 5:27-32
It used to be when parents told their children about sex they called it talking about "the birds and the bees." The idea was to use natural figures of speech to keep the discussion from becoming vulgar and crass. I'm going to try to do the same thing. We need to have some plain talk about sex, marriage, adultery, and divorce based on the Bible. I don't want it to descend into something unsuitable for mixed company, even when I am not in mixed company. This course has two versions, one for men and one for women. |
PROMISE KEEPING - Avoid breaking your word by being careful what you say. (4 lessons) Matthew 5:33-37
In Matthew 5:33-37 Jesus is teaching that we can avoid breaking our promises by making few enough promises that we can keep them. In this course we are going to examine that in the light of other Bible passages about making vows and keeping them.
LOVE YOUR ENEMY It is the Godly thing to do. (5 lessons) Matthew 5:38-48
In Matthew 5:38-48 Jesus is teaching that we can avoid hurting others and even murder by loving others, even if you don't want to. In this course we are going to examine that in the light of other Bible passages about loving others.
SECRET RIGHTEOUSNESS Let Your Light Shine Before Men. (4 lessons) Matthew 6:1-34
The theme of the 6th chapter of the Sermon on the Mount is public and private prayer and worship. In this course we are going to look at the chapter as a whole. In later courses we will look at various aspects of this chapter in more detail.
PRAYER POWER Transforming Power of Prayer (6 lessons) Matthew 6:5-13
The Lord's Prayer is studied in detail. Each aspect of the prayer is compared to other scriptures on that topic. You may also be intersted in our series of courses on the prayers and promises of the Bible.
